My niece is getting married in August, and she's asked "Big Daddy & The Uncles" -- aka the ad hoc band that my brother-in-law (her father), his two brothers, and I cobbled together 30-something years ago to play at my sister's wedding -- to regroup and perform a few numbers at her reception.

One of the tunes she requested is "Fly Me To The Moon" and we're going to play it pretty close to the Frank Sinatra/Count Basie version (i.e., the Quincy Jones arrangement) ...or at least, as close as you can with only guitar/piano/bass/drums/vox. I was thinking I would cop some of the woodwind & brass lines from the Jones arrangement and leave all the chording to the pianist

...but then it occurred to me, perhaps some intrepid jazz guitarists have come up with some interesting arrangements of this lovely tune, and I should check that out to see if there are any ideas worth stealing. So, before I just jump into the Google, anybody have any recomendations for a guitar-centric version of "Fly Me To The Moon"?

    Thanks.

Here is my trio doing it. You don’t have to get fancy, I think rhythm chords sound nice.

    Bob -

I'll give it to you straight. They're younger, it's their day. They'll be laughing, talking, eating, socialising, whatever. They're not interested in fancy arrangements and all that. All they'll hear is the tune, which they like. It'll come and go amongst others.

Just get it done. Don't get all intense about it, no one cares. Bang it out and they'll love it, that's all you need to do.

And don't play it too slow, it'll drag.

For what it’s worth, this has been my attitude for gigs and it’s working okay. Learn enough to get through it and then learn a little extra just in case you feel adventurous.

Well sure, plus you've missed the most salient point: by the time we hit the stage, I'll probably be drunk.

But I think if you're perceiving this effort on my part as "getting all intense" you don't know me: This isn't some GB gig where I have to ignore the fact that no one's paying attention to the band (been there, done that, 20+ years in the trenches), this is an opportunity for me to play music with some guys I haven't played with in over 30 years. I want to make our 15 minute set fun for me.

Also, I want to make it worth bringing my guitar on what would otherwise be a family reunion-type vacation that I'd ordinarily prefer to bring my bicycle to. So I have no intention of half-assing any of this. My neice requested several tunes, I'm gonna play them to the best of my abilities...for her and for me.

You can kind of overlay some passages from ATTYA.

Mind you, you've got to be quite good to 'just bang it out' :-)
