I totally agree with the Post from reg, if u cant freely play/hear any kind of syncopation etc on a 4/4 beat (the one most of us grew up with) u will have even more trouble improvising in odd time signatures.
One recording i always confront my Students with is all the things u are from methenys question and answer. Its just a 4/4 but rhythmically there is so much going on. It took months for me to not lose the form when i tried improvising along with them.
