I have listen to Pat Martino play Lazy Bird countless times over the years. I play the tune but basically it never gets called it is bop tune and you just go for broke. The last few months really getting it completely under control. Then I pick up a transcription of Pat's solo and what a thing of beauty to see on paper. I read well so reading it down is pretty easy, however unless you listen to Pat play the solo you can never appreciate the sense of phrasing and control. To me he is completely controlling the whole tune and the players. He drives into changes at times with a flurry then backs off a bit. To me it the perfect case of putting together a jazz solo of major consequences.
One can make the changes and I can they are straightforward and even a good clip. However really controlling like Pat takes some serious ability to sense time and space. If you have not heard this recording, I suggest it as the place to listen to and what it means to play hard bop and win.
