Heard about this guy via Jonathan Stout, and he's a wizard at recreating the old-school plectral jazz etudes of players from the pre-Swing Era.

Rob is a frequent visitor here as well. Quite a nice guy in fact as well as a great playor.
-
Yes, I realized after posting that that he is indeed quite well-known here, as he should be! Hoping to maybe meet him and do an article on him when I go to Scotland next year. Thanks for the reply.

Rob who? Never heard of him!
-
I always enjoy listening to Rob's video postings here.
Often they are solos that I haven't heard before written by players that are new to me.
And Rob always plays them beautifully!
-
Enough already. Get back to work!
-
i heard he’s nearly 7’ tall
-
Haha. A mere 6'3", I'm afraid.
-
Even at a mere 6'3"" you are an inspiration to many of us!
Always look forward to your posts.
-
Sure, he has great potential, but he's gotten into some weeeird atonal music lately.

As far as I know Rob plays every kind of a stringed box regardless of a number of strings attached to it.
I once PM'ed him at the Banjo Hangout
As far as I understand banjo is a mainstay for Rob. (Rob correct me if I'm wrong.)
I also once read his short article on the Turkish Tanbur (which he eventually sold ;-)) but mine still collects dust in the corner. What a delicate instrument when it's played the right way!
Rob - do you play anything with a bow? - Violin?
-
VKat, I no longer play the banjo. Funds are always tight, so I tend to sell before buying, and sometimes just need to sell to get by. But I tend to work on projects, which stops me from getting in a rut, and let's face it most string instruments (not bowed) use a similar technique. I did try playing cello and viol, but found the string tension and bow technique too time consuming.
I have five Mel Bay books coming out this year: three for mandolin, one for fretless bass guitar, and another of solo guitar pieces by Belgian composer, Gilbert Isbin. What's next? I never know. That's what makes it interesting! I love bouts of boredom, it means something is brewing!

Yes, I'm not very good at self promotion. Sometimes I do it, reluctantly, but sometimes I just put stuff out without mentioning it anywhere. I find the whole promotion thing a very negative experience. That said, I'm pleased you found them, and even more pleased you like them!
-
I'm very glad you gave up banjo playing. That is a very serious moral failing.
-
The definition of a gentleman is a man who can play the banjo, but doesn’t.
-
Or it can be pretty damn sweet..
-
that cat's for the birds!!
(they love his music too, hah)
the maestro!!! all accolades well deserved
cheers

See post #6...and thanks.

Hey Rob instead of de-railing this thread, why not start your own ‘Rob MacKillop’ thread?
-
Haha. Sorry.
The Rolling Stones are in Edinburgh tonight. Got my ticket and my Keef riffs at the ready. You never know!
-
Cool, I expect to see a “Rolling Stones on theorbo” video soon!

Billions, if not trillions, of ideas occur to humans every day. Not all of them are good ideas.
Has anyone tried the JHS Clover preamp pedal?
