Sad news indeed.
This is the first track I recall hearing Larry play on, with Mingus. (I didn't know who Coryell was at the time. A friend put this on a tape for me because he knew I liked guitar. It was a while before I found out who the guitarists were here.)

(Two threads on the passing of Larry Coryell have now been merged.)

RIP Larry. Had once chance to talk to him about 10 years ago.
this was maybe the first or second jazz tune I ever learned, back in HS in the mid70s.
this was the tune my friends and I used to play in the music store while "trying out" guitars.
Haven't listened to it in decades, but was surprised how quickly it came back to me when I was practicing this evening.Last edited by pkirk; 02-20-2017 at 11:47 PM.

Farewell, Larry. Thanks for the music and the memories.

Sad. Very kind man with a wildly creative soul. Only time I got to meet (and hear) him was around 1976. He played through my Twin at a university gig. Cranked it to 10 for the finale. Ideas and expression over tone, but what a free soul, infectious.
Life moves on, but I wish not so quickly, some times.

For me Larry was a fearless musical warrior - lots of chops but always pushing himself to the breaking point following his heart and ear.
-
He was generous with his time hanging out for a few hours, playing guitar and sharing his wisdom with me.. I don't think he believed me when I told him I had most all his recordings.. he will continue to be an inspiration... rest easy Larry.

The first lesson I had with Larry, I told him how much I loved this album...he looked at me and said let's play something off it...we did "How Insensitive". I was in shock that I was playing this beautiful piece with one of my heroes...we had another lesson set for next week...

RIP, Larry Coryell.
(My brother got to hang out with him - in the '80s, in south Wales.)
-
That's really sad...RIP Mr.Coryell.
-
He was my first jazz guitar hero. I had lots of his vinyl. He played with so many greats.
Early stuff with Gary Burton, Steve Swallow, Bob Moses...
-
Very sad new. One more. What an awful bad streak...
R.I.P.

Sad news. R.I.P. Larry Coryell.
-
He's one of my earliest and strongest influences. What a hell of a run, Larry.
-
Though I admired him, Larry's jazz guitar playing didn't really register with me or influence me. His wildly ambitious acoustic records of of Sheharazade and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, on the other hand, profoundly influenced me. Thank you Larry for all you gave to music.
-
Died in his sleep after a Gig- great way to go.
Sorry for his Family and Friends.
RIP Larry Coryell or possibly onto another Plane...
-
His great music will live on. Thanks Larry.
-
What a loss. I remember wearing out a copy of the Gary Burton "Duster" album and to go buy another. Larry was a true pioneer.
-
I heard him play (including Joey DeFrancesco on great form) at the Cork Jazz Festival last October.... at one point a roadie had come out & fiddle with some cables to get his pedal board working.
to roadie,"does it work now ?"
[stomps on distortion pedal]
to audience
"IT DO !!"
He hung around after the gig to chat & sign his latest CD.
-
Such a sad news... RIP
-
I just found out about this. What a bummer! Larry always played great music.
R.I.P. Larry, and hope you're playing away on the other side.
-
Larry was a Buddhist. Does that mean he may already be reincarnated?
