Some great Jazz going on in this thread.
That first video with Dave Cliff shows how compelling one can be with a solo without having to play at super-high beats per minute.
It was very instructional and I have it locked in my mind now. I am going to look for more of that type of playing.
Also, I could hear a lot of musical ideas that hearken back to the great Jazz players I revere.
Good stuff.
I wish him (and all other aging artists) as much joy as possible in the face of his health challenges.
Thanks for sharing this nugget. It was time well spent.

Thanks Chris,
I'm afraid I'm unaware of any clips or Videos featuring Ernie C
he is best heard live I suggest , very laid back but as you know
a very talented jazz guitarist and teacher. He is pals with some
formidable players, Allan Holdsworth, Dave Cliff, Martin Taylor,
and the late great Louis Stewart. Regrettably I don't see him
very often, but we do talk occasionally by phone.
It's good that Christianm77 joined this thread in an endeavour
to promote some of our homegrown talent and share it with
those who might have been blissfully unaware of their existence.
Best,
Alan

I've just remembered the track by Georgia Mancio
featuring Ernie Cranenburgh , that Chris pointed out
to me it is " You Go To My Head" on the album
Peaceful Place, worth a listen IMO

Dave has an official Facebook page, operated by either him or a family member. Updates are infrequent but there are some nice old photos on there.
I expect you can view it without a Facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/davecliffjazzguitar/

The Warne & Konitz boxed set arrived today. Maximum early Cliffy impending....
-
BTW I feel I should add - Dave Warren, the guy between Dave and Ernie in the video is flipping badass as well - he doesn't seem that well known. I rate him one of the top guys in the UK.
-
The box set is terrific - just finished Cd 3 which has a live date and a studio quartet with Warne. Dave spins consistently swinging lines and sounds completely in his element, great touch tone and taste. Warne is simply incredible. Highly recommend...

Yes, I have hardly anything by Warne Marsh so I am very tempted by this. And having Dave on it is a bonus.

If anyone here uses Spotify, this Warne Marsh session with Dave is on there.

Yes, that's on the box set as well. Absolutely burning.

Dave Cliff is playing the opening set at The 606 Club next Wednesday, 18th October. He's playing in a duo with guitarist Peter Rubie. I haven't seen Dave's name in any gig listings for a while, so this would be a good opportunity to catch him.
It'll be a good night for guitar fans - Jim Mullen plays two sets afterwards, followed by John East's band (Carl Orr on guitar).
WED 19TH - PETER RUBIE/DAVE CLIFF (7:30PM); ZOE FRANCIS FEAT. JIM MULLEN, STAN SULZMANN (8:25PM); JIM MULLEN ORGAN TRIO (9:20PM); JOHN EAST PROJECT FEATURING DAVE LEWIS, CARL ORR, SCOTT BAYLIS (10:10PM) :: £14
The music this evening stretches across the eras, from the very beginnings of the Club to the most recent artists to play here regularly.
Many, if not most, of the musicians who performed at the original 606 on Kings Road are either no longer playing or no longer with us. But I thought it would be nice to have at least one set from two musicians who were there at the very start, guitarists Peter Rubie and Dave Cliff. Peter, a fine musician, has been resident in New York since 1980 and so his melodic, straight ahead playing is perhaps less well known to a new generation of musicians and audiences, but Dave Cliff has been a regular at the Club since I took it over in 1976. With work alongside the likes of Lee Konitz, Georgie Fame and Nina Simone Dave has moved on from being the young lion of the 70's to one of the most venerated musicians on the UK jazz scene.
Similarly, guitarist Jim Mullen has been a stalwart of the Club since the very early 80's. A fluent and inventive musician with a vast CV of world class performances behind him, I recall Jim and Dave playing together at the old Club in a two guitar front line that lasted, off and on, for a number of years. One of the many musicians who followed us to the new venue in 1988, Jim has been part of the fabric of the Club for so long that we actually named a part of the venue after him (the "Jim Mullen suite" is still there..). “[Jim Mullen]...From co-leading Morrisey-Mullen in the seventies to his current groups, Jim Mullen has remained an irreplaceable, central, popular figure in British jazz.” London Jazz News
And then on to two of the newer arrivals. Singer Zoe Francis first appeared on our doorstep about 4 years ago. A gentle performer with an uncanny knack to make everything she touches sound good, she epitomises the breadth of the talent found in the UK Jazz scene today. " [Zoe Francis]…she retains an almost diffident charm and a vocal quality that seems to hark back to band singers of the thirties and forties" London Jazz News; “[Stan Sulzmann]...Ravishing, delicious, powerful" - Guardian.
And finally singer/organist John East, proving its never too late to strut your stuff! An enormous supporter of the Club in both spirit and practice John was a member for many years before, around 6 years ago, I discovered his hidden talents! Now a regular with his terrific band John has found yet another constructive way to support us in what we do and how we want to do it. "[John East Project]...Vocalist and Hammond player East leads a fine band...." Time OutLast edited by David B; 10-12-2016 at 03:57 PM.
