Love his Irish humour - when his son asked him if he would prefer burial or cremation, he said 'Surprise me!'

An American fan once asked him did he know the Edge from U2 = apparently Louis replied yes - but they had an agreement that the Edge stayed away from Jazz and Louis stayed away from hats...........

Another time in Dublin he was playing with Lee Konitz - after the first number Konitz asked if could play a little quieter..........Louis pulls out a pen & paper from his jacket and writes something down; gives the note to Konitz and starts to pack up - "What's this?" asks Konitz - "It's the number of a fucker who players quietly" replied Louis as he left the stage..........

Limerick Jazz Festival had a tribute to Louis last weekend - 4 great Irish Guitarists - David O'Rourke (now based in NYC); Joe O'Callaghan, Tommy Halferty & Hugh Buckley played together - a fantastic tribute...........

Wow, he's really sounding like Kenny Burrell there. If there were no vid I would have thought that was Kenny for sure.

i've seen him on a number of occasions - in pretty heavy company

and he blew everyone off the stand every time

and very obviously not just in terms of chops (jack wilkins was one of the guitarists he 'put into perspective')

it was in terms of musicality. he COMMUNICATED immediately and consistently - both with his sound and touch and with his phrasing

he always made the guitar sound lovely: smooth - clear - strong

and he only said interesting things with it

on ballads he could make people feel kind of sad and reflective

    that's the real deal

There are some good videos on YouTube of Louis with Mundell Lowe. Louis plays a great solo at 3:30 in this one (Billies Bounce):
