I'd love to get an active soul-jazz conversation going on here. Charles Kynard, Jimmy Smith-like stuff and the guitarists that go along with it.

Who are you favorite soul-jazz players?

(Forgive me if there is already a thread on this, I didn't find one I recent history).

    Grant Greene of course!

Love Melvin Sparks as well, and early GB. Anything with Jimmy Smith or Jack McDuff or Jimmy McGriff. If you play jazz on an organ, it is by definition gonna have some SOUL in it.

Check this out--Melvin Taylor--haven't heard him before, but like it. He used to play in Pinetop Perkins band apparently. I love this song--an old Herbie Mann tune.

A different direction from George Benson, check out Hiram Bullock's distorted wail from 7.15 on this wonder:

I love Jimmy Smith, esp when Kenny Burrell is on guitar. May add some of that below, but this track by Cannonball Adderley would be my one-tune introduction to soul jazz.

The good stuff (for me) extols positive and uplifting values, and promotes peace and love, tolerance and respect; without talking about them directly - and without stuffiness.

I've become obsessed with 'recontextualising' my favourite Folk-Rock classics, which I feel is what many of my heroes did (with varying degrees of sophistication). This is way too smooth, but it's a small step in a new direction.

"soul jazz" or what they're calling "acid jazz" these days is probably my favorite genre of jazz.
our quartet plays a lot of tunes from that era.

let's start w/the "Mod Squad", the rhythm section that played on so many soul sessions.
Melvin Sparks, guitar, Leon Spencer Jr., Hammond B-3, Idris Muhammed, drums.

here's a cut from Melvin's Spark Plug lp, w/said trio + horn section, playing and old Kool and The Gang tune.

Melvin and Idris are pretty well known, but organist Spencer sometimes gets overlooked, even though he was a superb player, check out his solo here.....
