What is up with Larry Coryell? He canceled some gigs last week for health issues and I just got a notification that he canceled the Montreal gig on July 6 😐

Larry had a sinus infection and surgery. He was in the hospital for about two weeks but is home now. His wife told me he faces a six week recovery.

Yeesh! Six weeks! I had a viral infection that lasted six weeks. Seemed like I was never going to feel better. Poor Larry!

    Sinus infections are no joke!

I used to suffer from them. The worst was trying to sleep when I could not breathe throught my nose. My God, it was like having a demon at my bedside all night, squeezing my nostrils shut with his bestial paws! And then, I would be so tired the next day from lack of sleep.

    Terrible.

Best of luck to Larry on a speedy recovery and no more sinus issues.

Best wishes to Larry for a speedy recovery!

I was just watching a video of him yesterday where his advice to younger jazz players was to find a really good teacher who can help you cut through the "jive" that's out there. Love that!

Well, neglected sinus - and many other pyogenic - infections may have really horrible consequences:
Currently, a friend of mine is hospitalized with endogenuous spondylitis, that's osteomyelitis of the spinal column. The path of the infection is most likely a protracted maxillary sinusitis, the pathogens spread by the blood. Hospital mortality is in the region of 2% to 17%.
Such complications don't occur frequently, but neither are as unusual as lay persons may think.

Things which cost nothing are those which cost most. Why? Because they cost us the effort of understanding that they are free.

Larry's wife posted an update...apparently the surgery did't go well and he developed an infection to his brain and sepsis. He's on IV antibiotics at hope and has "good days, and bad days". He has had to cancel gigs and the medication is running about $1,400.00 a week. There's an online relief fund being established at a music school in Clearwater, Fl. I'll get more info and post.

You mean Medicare is not paying for his medications with a brain infection and sepsis???

I have not hit it yet, but I believe Medicare pays only about 80% of the cost of hospitalization and meds. Sepsis is a serious life threatening condition as are meningitis or encephalitis or brain abscess. Best wishes for recovery to Larry and family.

Well I am sorry to hear that. I saw a patient on Wednesday that had meningitis after a sinus procedure. Bad stuff.

Not to hijack the thread, just my personal thing, but there are few developed countries in the world where a) you have to have a fundraiser to pay for health care costs and stave off bankruptcy, and b) one of the best jazz musicians in the world would have to have a fundraiser to pay for health care costs.

I lived in Germany for 3 years and NEVER ONCE saw a poster for a fundraiser for health costs. Sorry, rant off.

I hope Larry Coryell is ok. One of the true greats. Seems to be criminally under appreciated these days. There is some great cinematically shot film from a celebration concert on youtube. I hope the whole thing gets released. I always do some semi-regular searches to look for Coryell on youtube. There are some great clips out there. He plays Minor Blues type things so authoritatively. He's forgotten more things about Jazz Guitar than most people will ever learn. Master of Masters.

There was a benefit here in Orlando last night for Larry with many local players at a new club Blue Bamboo. Larry played an amazing set and is back better than ever. He's back on the road next month starting at the Maui Jazz Festival and on to Europe. God Bless the guy.
