I'll say this though about the cross over of Elvis. I didn't know any black people who listened to, liked or admired him. So that's a drawback to his real cross over appeal.
i am not sure if I am right or not... it's an american story and it's difficult to look at it from outside...

But when Michael Jackson died I thought: first they took white guy (Elvis) and made him imitate black guys and used him and then killed him... but it was not enough... they took gifted black guy turned him litterally into white and then used and killed him...

Frankly I cannot see any crossovers here... Nothing against Elvis or Michael here...
it was predatory hypocritic marketing that uses any means and controversals to earn more and more and more money

I'd better be Bud Powell in asylum or play in empty bar than being invoved in that bs

They didn't "make" Michael Jackson white. He had a condition (vitiligo) that caused his skin to lighten. Trying to claim that that was specifically the music industry trying to make him more appealing to white audiences is insanity.

I am sorry .. it seems you took it too litterally.. my fault maybe.

They did not make Elvis sing like this too.. he did it himself.

I think the ways how these things work are more intricate...

human destiny can also be a metaphore in itself

Jonah you are probably righter than you know--MJ may have had vitiligo, but he was extremely conflicted throughout his life both culturally and sexually.

The pressures of fame and culture (and an enabling doctor) killed Elvis and MJ...

I'm joining this discussion late, but Doc Jeff is right about the segregated society of the bop era

Hell, the black musicians playing in those clubs in NYC weren't even allowed in the place except as entertainers. People under the age of 40 really don't understand the way things were. Even if it isn't pleasant, we shouldn't rewrite the past to make it fit into our present sensibilities. It was just the way it was

And access to music today is nothing like it was even when I was a teenager in the 70s. for me, I was lucky to live in a big city with used record stores and lots of drug addicts who had to sell their records for a dime bag.

And back then we still felt like we had a huge advantage over our parents...at least we might actually find a record we were looking for somewhere

but today, there's so much stuff out there that people don't even know how good they have it

Can result in information overload... But yes it's absolutely amazing, even from when I was getting into music in the 90s. I mean, there were only so many CD's I could buy!
