Well... actually... I think we would have to ask Wynton Kelly what the hell he was trying to do lol. Back in those times was hard to get music from other parts of the world. Maybe he thought that was a "brazilian" feel.

It is not a bossa feel, thats for sure. Could be named as a "foreign samba" maybe? lol

Zhivago, thanks for your list above. You brought up
. I could listen to him all day - which I do at the moment!

Do you have any idea which type of pickups he uses on his Les Paul Custom? And what kind of strings he uses?

Luis Salinas is a compatriot of mine, and years ago I used to see Him in jam sessions that He frequented, before Luis became famous
I remember something in relation to their tastes in guitar strings,he used to say "heavy gauge for nylon guitars and ligth gauge for electric guitar"
He used to use a high action on their guitars, and he used have two Gibsons LP,one Custom, and one Standard black, which is the commonly used today for Luis for the live show
I hope you find it useful
    Greetings

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned either Romero Lubambo or Guinga in this thread.

I've been waiting for someone to mention Romero Lubambo. For my money, they don't come any better in the Brazilian/nylon string jazz guitar category. He's also about the world's nicest guy. I had the profound pleasure of spending a day hanging out with him last summer, while he was here for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. He wanted to check out the guitars of my good pal and local luthier Richard Prenkert and we three spent the day together. I practically wet my pants when Romero made me jam with him a bit. Best I could manage was a meager comping on Autumn Leaves. (By the way, for you cutaway nylon string fans, Romero ended up buying one of Richard's guitars; you can see him playing it in the video from the United Nations National Jazz Day concert from this past April.) Being primarily a classical player, I also play a couple of Guinga tunes. He's similarly awesome. For anyone in Sonoma County, Guinga will be playing two shows in Healdsburg on August 25. I think that's a relative rarity. I last saw him maybe eight years ago at Yoshi's in Oakland.

We could also add Conrado Paulino, great guitarist from Sao Paulo
