A very touching new music video from Glen Campbell as he deals with the final stages of Alzheimers. Glen was a fine guitarist, songwriter and performer. I remember having a few Glen Campbell records when I was a kid. Even if you're not familiar with his music, this video is quite moving.

Back in the 60's getting into guitar and Jazz and Bob Dylan. I saw this album and had to get it Dylan Jazz I think Jim Horn was who got listed as the artist. Basically it was what now is called the Wrecking Crew and Glen Campbell was the guitar player. Glen's Jazz guitar work on that album was amazing and I used to love playing it for guitar players and ask them if they could guess who it was, it was a surprise most the time. Glen was a great all round guitarist besides being a pop singer/songwriter.

In the UK. circa '70's, the BBC presented a series of Glen Campbell specials where they gave Glen a virtually free hand to
choose the music and showcase his eclectic side. He did some pop, country, bluegrass ( accompanied by then young banjo whiz, Carl Jackson) and the occasional tour de force - "Back Home In Indiana", springs to mind as one of his displays of virtuosity - a great natural player and his ill health is very sad news, indeed.

I wish Glen and his family the very best and thanks for dazzling this guitarist many years ago !

When I first read the title of the thread, I thought that Campbell had passed and the OP was making a statement. I didn't know it was the name of a song. My first reaction to what I thought was a comment .. "I'm not gonna miss you" . . was, yeah . . not too many people will. Campbell was, by the accounts of many, a drunk and a mean SOB who physically abused some of his women, including Tanya Tucker. I'm not sure if that's true or not . . But, from what I've seen of him and interviews I've read . . I really don't care much for him at all.

In response to honkytonkpicker's comment of, "No . . not jazz for sure" . . if you heard him on stage and doing far more than just holding his own with George Benson at an awards show on an all out straight ahead jazz tune . . you'd feel differently about that. Campbell could, and did, do just about anything he wanted to with a guitar. He was an amazingly gifted and talented guitarist and musician when he was healthy . . and sober.

Youtube had an interview with Campbell in which he took responsibility and showed remorse for his alcoholism and his having been a mean drunk who had been abusive. I believe the interview/profile was from the 1990s:

He discusses his i.a. alcoholism also in these videos:

If he overcame alcoholism, more power to him!

Campbell was an incredibly gifted-talented man. He clearly had his deamons. Many people do. From what I've read, his addictions weren't the root cause of his mean spiritedness. He beat on women when he was sober too. He openly disrespected George Benson on national television when they played a guitar duo at an awards show. He was clearly sober that evening. Maybe his remorse was genuine . . maybe it wasn't. His comments about his remorse were made in the context of an interview . . . . which more than likely he was hopefull might help to resurrect his career and earnings. I'd certainly not expect him to say he had no remorse for being the person that history has shown him to be.

But, I truly hope it is genuine. It seems that Tanya Tucker has totally forgiven him, based upon recent comments she made.

What did Glen do to disrespect George Benson?

I wish I could remember the specific awards show, but I can't. Campbell was on stage and had just finished doing a song. then, the MC walked out to greet him. He spoke for a bit with Campbell and then turned to the audience and announced that as a special treat, George benson was going to join Campbell for a duo number. George then walked out onto the stage and kept turning around looking back from where he just walked out. He sheepishly said to the MC . . with a grin and a giggle . . "I can't find my guitar". Campbell shot back to the MC . . "well, somebody get this guy a guitar. We don't want this to be totally unfair" . . and he accented "totally". I remember it like it was yesterday. Benson took a step back and gave him a look as if to say . . "Really???" From then on, I felt that Campbell was a piece of shit. But . . even with that said . . . his performance with Benson shocked the hell out of me. He was amazing. But, Benson knew that the snide comment was going to put him and his playing under a microscope . . and he rose to the occasion. It was one of the best guitar duo performances I've ever seen, even to this date. I keep saying duo . . but, they had a full band behind them and they were out front.

After they ended the song . . it was clear they they each knew that the other player was smokin' hot. But, it didn't change my opinion of Campbell.

The next artist to perform was Stevie Wonder. He was taken to his seat at his keyboard, and before he started playing he put that big ass grin on his face and said, "by the way, the reason George couldn't find his guitar, is because I had it and was trying to play it".

I hope this story jogs someone's memory of having seen this specific show.

When Glen Campbell hosted The Midnight Special, he introduced "one of the greatest musicians in the entire world, ... who has hits on three charts---pop, rhythm & blues, and jazz---George Benson".

This evidence suggests that Campbell showed respect towards Benson. During this broadcast (Season 4, Episode 34; 2 July 1976), Glen Campbell and George Benson played "Affirmation".

Musicians often kid around, particularly as part of a stage persona. I remember a Chet Atkins video where he admonished an archangel like Les Paul that he "wanted the music played right".

Campbell & Benson played "Nature Boy" together during the Billboard Number 1 Music Awards

wish i could see the clip that Patrick mentions. it just sounds like a joke from an experienced entertainer trying to divert the audience's attention and kill some time during an awkward moment.

from the clips above it sounds like Glen knew how great George was.

also, George was/is not without ego and was probably on edge and embarrassed that he couldn't find his guitar at that moment.

I too wish I could find the clip. I did search for it. Trust me on this one . . it wasn't '70s schtick and it wasn't a joke. If you saw the clip you'd know by the inflection and body language from Campbell . . as well as the surprised look and reaction from Benson. There was no doubt, [at least in my mind] that it was an intentionally snide comment from Campbell.

Are there other great guitarists who can sing as well as George Benson or Glen Campbell?

There is a interview out there in the ether... (I think Carol Kaye) who said Glen was incredible in the studio though he couldn't read at all...or something to that effect.

Looks like the Dylan Jazz is on Itunes

Yeah . . but it was very early in Campbell's professional career also. I really wish you could have seen the show I referenced. You'd see that Benson had nothin' on Campbell either. I'm tellin' ya . . if I didin't already know that Cmapbell wasn't a top rated jazz guitarist . . . I'd have sworn that he was . . and that jazz was his main genre. I still hold true to my gut instincts feeling about Glen Campbell as a person. But, as a guitarist . . he was an amazing talent and could hang with any jazzer or jazz ensemble.

I believe that John Pizzarelli is one of the better artists out there at combining vocal and guitar playing skills and capabilities. Larry Carlton tries it a few times and failed miserably. I remember seeing him at a performance in New Jersey . . little shit hole of a place on Route 35 in Keyport, I forget the name. He had just finished about a 12 or 15 minute performance, combining two of his earlier smokers . . Room 335 and Point it Up. Got a huge standing O. When the crowd (about 40 people lolol) calmed down, he stepped up to the mic and said . . "Yeah . . thanks a lot for that. Man, if only could sing too . . I'd be a star".

I've had a few similar experiences when I was younger and they left me confused at the time as to why. It took me several years of dealing with musicians to realize, "Oh, this is how addicts behave". Now when I see guys suddenly take a sharp turn toward mean for no reason I think to myself, "I hope he gets some help before it's too late".

B B King doesn't play as well but he's a great singer. His voice and guitar complement each other enviably.
