Dan Barrett is getting old. So am I. But it beats the alternative. Jonathon Doyle gets around. I've enjoyed his playing for years, in different situations.

Jonathan seems to have a fairly high action.

I purchased an instrument from Jonathan and can attest to it having high action and heavy strings. I kept the action, but moved from 13s down to 12s.

Currently I'm part of the project with a singer who's going for that old school funk and soul sound, doing James Brown and Marvine Gaye to name a few... Sometimes with a small combo we also cover Chuck Berry more obscure songs... Some of the keyboard/piano players we have would completely ignore the dynamics and techinique of that style and do whatever they please. Jazz organ sound with altered chords on No Particular Place To Go, totally kills the vibe. Why not staccato piano like on original recordings, 'oh, no, I don't do that'...

It was a great interview. It was funny, because when they mentioned Rick Beato because I thought of Rick saying just recently how the benefit of using YT was that if he's interviewing someone and the interview needs to be three hours long, then three hours it is. Without the restraints of more traditional channels he - Rick - said people like him are free to chat with artists as long as they like. I felt like, despite the length of this interview, Jonathan had a lot more to say. I'd have happily listened for another hour! Nevertheless, a great interview and much of what Jonathan said really makes sense and resonates here, too.

JS is very inspiring and thankfully he did most of the talking (it’s not uncommon for BB to talk 50% of the time). Worthwhile!

Hey all, I’m really excited to be leading my trio plus our singer Hilary Alexander at the world famous Birdland in NYC, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd!

Since I’ve spent almost my whole career playing the in Swing Dance world, it’s a change to play listening rooms with no dance space, and I’m hoping folks will turn out so that I can keep getting such opportunities!

We’ll be joined by the great Jen Hodge all weekend, and reed players Ricky Alexander on Friday and Saturday, and Dennis Lichtman on Sunday!

    Cheers!

Jonathan - that’s great news! Congratulations on the Birdland gigs! A great chance to turn even more people on to pre-bop jazz guitar. I wish you all success!

I was there, Saturday and Sunday. A complete pleasure.

Sunday, I beelined there directly from an open mic and had my guitar with me (and I have…several overdue NGD posts to make up for…), a 1933 roundhole Gibson L-50. Between sets, Jonathan and I geeked out over it, and he played it and pronounced it a good instrument.

It was a wonderful experience, great work by the whole band. Wonderful, down to earth folks who love the music. It was an honor and privilege to meet them. I learned a lot.

Hey all, the folks at the Blue Guitars were so extraordinarily kind to lend me a 1995 Monteleone Radio Flyer.
Here's a video I made with it just blowing on "Deed I Do" over a basic rhythm guitar backing track.

    I hope you dig it.

Also, we just got back from the Redwood Coast Music Festival, and it was an absolute BLAST. It's one of my favorite events every year, and I highly recommend checking it out. Among the guitar players at the festival this year: Joel Patterson, Jake Sanders, Deke Dickerson, Tommy Harkenrider, Duke Robillard, and Redd Volkaert. (Last year we also had Whit Smith, Matt Munisteri, and John Reynolds)

Our good buddy Bill Reagan snagged some footage of our Trio set at the Festival, where I was joined by Dennis Lichtman on clarinet (and mandolin), and Matt Weiner on bass.
With those killer musicians joining me, the set was a real stand out. Here's the first selection, "Rose Room"

Also, perhaps this is better put in the gear subforum, but I made this little video showing my rig.
