As guitar players, we learn a lot by watching other guitar players - transcribing solos, learning licks, copying technique, etc. At least I do.
But what non-guitar playing musicians do you learn from? Is there a particular musician that has helped you become a better musician? Or is there another instrument in general that helps you with your guitar playing?
Just curious.

Sax and trumpet past and present.

I'm a big sax, trumpet and voice fan.

Lester young riffs translate so well. Not as busy as bird
-
Miles, Bird, Coltrane, Rollins, Hubbard, Chick Corea, Jarrett, Brecker, David Liebman, Red Garland, Dexter Gordon, Clifford Brown, McCoy Tyner
-
Bill Evans, Tommy Flanagan and many, many sax, flute and brass players starting with Paul Desmond, Chet Baker etc. etc.......

To many to name, and not all of them are Jazz artist.
Lee Konitz, Will Vinson and Paul Desmond
Ambrose Akinmusire and Christian Scott
Thelonious Monk and Fred Hersch
Beverly Kenny, Becca Stevens, Rachael Price and Leah Siegel
and a bunch more!
-
Chick Corea
-
All of them, I guess
-
Great drummers.
-
Paul Desmond, Art Pepper and Chet Baker. The only ones that play slow enough for me to work out and they are tasty.
-
Keith Jarrett. Jack De Johnette. Gary Peacock.
-
I just listen to the drummers. I leave the poetry up to others.
-
I really, really try to listen to the individual sound of each instrument. What makes this trumpet player sound different from another trumpet player? Where do they pause? How are the dynamics? How is the language played? Listening to Hot House now on repeat trying to get down all the details
-
all the jazz musicians and vocalists I like [way too many to list], though Lee Morgan and Dexter Gordon stand out.
"Beverly Kenny"
good call, love her stuff.
-
Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Bartok, Messiaen, Stravinsky, Copland, Bernstein. The great master of harmony of the modern era: Nelson Riddle.
-
Sax: Prez (Lester Young)
Trumpet: Miles Davis
Though I'm really digging Johnny Griffin with Monk, and with Wes.

Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Cannonball, Coltrane, Evans, Tyner, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, well:: It's easier to list those I haven't learned much from and that group is mostly guitar players, although they are usually great people to learn what not to do from.
-
Armando Chick Corea. Probably more famous for blazing his own trail than playing standards! But boy is he one baad cat!!
-
Me, too. I really like Chet Baker - very tasty stuff.
