Interesting surprise for me to see this post. I know George from back in the 90s when I still lived in Albany. He is at least known around New York's Capital Region (Albany-Schenectady-Troy), but it's nice to see him getting a little recognition beyond that area.

As for the point of the thread, I could go on all day about great blues players no one has ever heard of but for jazz, I might mention a few kind of obscure guys who are all deceased: Arv Garrison, Billy Bauer and Tiny Grimes.

Agreed, Patrick. Chuck Wayne (who died back in 1997 by the way) was one of the greats but that clip does him a disservice as the band isn't happening at all. A better example of his soloing abilities might be this one @ 0:38:

... and here's one of his finest arrangements:

I find that there are a lot of great players that teach in universities and are well known in some parts but aren't really internationally recognised.

Thanks for all the great responses. I'm sure the guitarists we've all named would love to know people are thinking of them. Let's keep 'em coming! The video links really help.

Still alive and playing. I wrote him to see if we would get the chance to see him in the States, but his manager replied it would not be cost effective to make the trip. Too bad.

I doubt many people here have heard of Australian jazz guitarists like James Muller, peter O'Mara, Albare. There are some great guitarists from Australia such as Frank Gambale, I'm sure we all know him.

What about the best guitar players that guitar players never heard of?

Egberto Gismonti, Bill Connors, Peter Leitch, Stan Samole, John Clark, John Basile, Tom Giacabetti, Joaquin Lievano, etc............
