1.Anyone have a link to, or know, the '"correct" changes to My one and only love?? The GG version is so simple and pure but I have a hard time hearing and transcribing piano accompaniment. I don't like the Real Book changes...all slash chords and too many chords per measure.
2. I haven't heard any comping by GG yet....seems he plays heads, solos, then sits out. Any other guitarists known for playing the guitar as just a melody instrument??

In response to point 2., I have heard Grant Comp on I Remember April during the bass solo, and also So What (though somewhat sparsely on this song, just a rhythmic two-note motif). One of my coworkers commented on a Grant Green CD I lent to him, complaining about Grant not using Chords. I hear BB King was always the same way.

The album Green Street has lots of his comping during bass solos. He is actually one of the very best guitar compers during bass solos. He keeps it interesting melodically and rhythmically.
-
Thanks to all...Lots to look at and practice now. Getting a little hung up on GG right now....them's a lot of cool changes Mster...tx
-
You're quite welcome. I just provided the basic 7th chords, for the most part. The piano is playing extensions here and there, and Grant is adding them melodically, too.

yeah, check out any of his organ trio work with Big John Patton and Baby Face Wilette, all on Blue note. stacked with Grant Green comping.
-
"I just provided the basic 7th chords, for the most part"......Ha...and a lot of subs I'd say!! Hey M-ster...wow...this is cool, but pretty far from RealBook changes...and In Eb Major as well! Sounds great so far but I will play along with GG to try to really get it.
I don't want to push it but i desperately need GG changes to My Favorite things too....I finally transcribed the whole head and first solo chorus, as well as his different structure...(going back to Em7, F#m7 vamp after every section)....I can't get all the chords and the RealBook is not even close I'm afraid.
Tx a ton, Sailor

Um, well, I found the clip on YouTube and copped the changes for you. What I provided is what they're playing on the Grant Green version you asked about ... no embellishments (by me, anyway). Same key, etc., and yes, they're not playing the RealBook changes.

To Losaltosjoe - The melody to My one and only is available anywhere and the great changes are supplied above by M-ster. Just transpose from Cmaj to Eb maj.
M-ster...this is my problem...I LOVE the Sonny Clark version....that is the head, (and 4 bar vamps after each section), I just transcribed...brilliant....I'd like to take the whole changes and melody from sonny clark version but at the end I'm going to add the Em7, F#m7 vamp to solo over....a la coltrane.
So I guess i'd love to know Sonny Clark version
BTW, I got My one and only down and it is beautiful!! Thanks a million.

The Sonny Clark version (there are 8 bars of intro - E-11 to F#-11/E - before the chart):
Code:||: E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E | A-7 | D7(9) | Gmaj7 | C7lyd | F#-11 | F#-11 | F#-11 | B7alt | E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E | E-11 | F#-11/E :|| E-7 | E-7 | F#-7(b5) | B7 | E-7 | G7(13) | C7(9) | B7(b9) | A-7 | D7(9) | Gmaj7 | C7lyd | F#-7(11) | F#-7(11) | B7alt | B7alt | Emaj7(9) | F#-7(9)/E | Emaj7(9) | F#-7(9)/E | Emaj7(9) | F#-7(9)/E | Emaj7(9) | F#-7(9)/E ||

GG comps beautifully on Ike Quebec's Blue and Sentimental album, which sounds like one of those sessions in which the piano player failed to show.
-
M-ster....I owe you a couple brother...this is great...and again, nothing like the RealBook. C7lyd?....#4?
I like how he holds the F#-11 for 3 bars before B7alt...I thought it was a F#m7b5.
The EMaj7 part is cool too.
After this whole piece I'm gonna jam a dorian thing over Em, F#m...but the melody is not Dorian at all...natural minor, right??
Tx again, Sailor

9, #11, 13 are all available. Try something like x-3-2-3-3-2

For the B7, use F/B or F7/B, like x-2-1-2-1-1
You're quite welcome. Yes, the original is mostly E minor / G major.

sailor - my repertoire just got a lot better, BTW!

Thanks for this thread and especially to M-ster for his more than competent replies. Hadn't heard GG's version of "My One And..." before - beautiful and very very good for a beginner like me because it's slow and you can develop your sense of melody here while being able to take your time.
Just purchased a 4 CD box set of Grant Green's early albums - more great stuff!
-
Just discovered GG myself a few months ago...already totally hooked. Been trying to figure out changes to this
just a blues that turns into Cantaloupe woman in think...no info on internet that I can find. Fun to transcribe melody and very playable.
M-ster has been extremely helpful...I'm good at transcribing melodies but the chords always semm bague and can be interpreted a number of ways.

Grant comps on most of his stuff with Larry Young also. Brilliant comping on Talkin About JC, and the album His Majesty King Funk on Verve, and also Iron City on Cobblestone - where he gets into A Love Supreme type vamp on one of the tunes. Grant comps a lot like Kenny Burrell did during the sixties.

I LOVE this Newport jam...the beginning is so cool and I like how it turns into Cantaloupe Woman...kind of...different changes, slower, bluesier. I still can't really figure out the changes....sounds like 12 bar blues in D. At least the melody works over that for now

It was probably worked out with the pianist Billy Taylor and Grant beforehand at a rehearsal for the gig.Possibly a particular piano comp Billy Taylor used, combined with Grant's take on the melody. Right at the end of the performance you can hear Grant hitting full chords between the fade-out melody.
Someone from a guitar mag or something similar should try and do an article on this concert while some of the participants are still alive. Surely all would have strong memories of this night.
George Benson, Kenny Burrell and Lonnie Smith are still very much with us. George Benson and Lonnie Smith in particular seems to love talking about their memories of these times.

His playing with Baby Face Willette was fantastic!

But (a tiny but):
There's an extra bar at the end of the intro that finally ends (That's what I hear anyway) on an E7#9 chord (as a tritone sub for Bb7 ?) before it goes into the main theme...
