I found a thread that mentioned well known male singers who have chops: John Pizzarelli, George Benson, Marty Grosz. I believe Russell Malone can be added to that list but he's better known as a top notch instrumentalist.

Yet, I was trying to look up female vocalist who can articulate some nice jazz chords under their singing and it seems pretty rare unless they play bossa nova. Just seems more harder to find well-known gals who can swing or bebop some vocals and comp.

Madeleine Peyroux is the first that came to mind.

This lady specializes in loads of standards that are familiar and obscure and she can accompany nicely, too.

Just recently found Diane Hubka. Seems to sporadically play, but knows her chords.

Sure Esperanza Spalding counts...on bass guitar

I love Joni Mitchell, she's in a league of her own.

It seems like Eperanza Spalding is the Diana Krall of bassist. It be neat to seat the rise of the expert guitar wielding songstress.

Check out her choice of notes and GROOVE in this solo. She's so in the pocket that she makes something else happen when she plays. That elusive thing that I love about single note soloing. For me, she has it.
The Sax player has the thing as well.....in fact the band is "a band". Fantastic stuff.

Hey, Melissa's a friend of mine, too! (We met on-line in Jimmy Bruno's guitar school a few years back, but still keep up the correspondence. And we once caught a Kenny Burrell show down in Oakland together. I hope to be visiting her in Sacto in the coming months, when I'm there for a court appearance.)

Have you heard her tunes on the new Darius Babazadeh CD "Endless Stars"? She does a lovely version of Blossom Dearie's "In a Silent Tear."
