Interesting comments from Pat Metheny on Youtube and it's effect on performers.
What do you think about it?

He's got a point, but on the other hand it is also an easy way to spread your own media (if you are
not backed by PR firms etc like him.)
Jens
PS
the same interview has a clip about nails and steel strings that I thought was really interesting...
-
I'm not sure I'd want THAT clip on youtube.
-
He really is on the money. The fact that anything you do shows up on youtube really prevents performers from taking chances. I've had more than one pro performer( although not as high profile has Pat) tell me they don't want anything of their's on youtube because one bad performance, even just one song can hurt their reputation. It is especially scary for new musicians who haven't had time to hone their craft before this. Just imagine if Charlie Parker had been filmed when he was first starting out. Most people know the story about him getting laughed off the bandstand. You know how harsh youtube comments are, he may have given up music altogether if that was filmed lol.
-
Very intelligent observations. It's no secret that people these days are obsessed with iphones, image, and reality t.v. Combine them all together and you get inappropriate and unwanted filming everywhere you go. But you can't really do anything about it, since it would not be legal, and possibly not even ethical to kill all the stupid, tacky, rude people. You just have to put up with it, unfortunately. And plus Pat, if you killed off all the stupid people, there wouldn't be many people left to buy your recordings, would there?

I just had a disturbing vision of Kenny G holding up his iPhone and videoing a Pat Metheny concert.
-
I can see that it could be used to a new performers advantage but I get where Pat is coming from.
It's a cultural thing mainly in the West. Just basic rudeness and lack of respect.
It's that balance between the rights of the individual and what's best for the community.
The balance is a little.....out.

Cool clips. I enjoyed hearing Pat talk.
-
Made me think of this
-
Pat's has some great insight in to music and life.
Cool video!
-
so, who is the other piano player (besides KJ)?
-
I agree with the points he makes, but he's not the one that should be complaining. He's Pat Metheny. Everything he plays is godly.
On the other hand, I'm sure if someone recorded and uploaded my playing at any given jam session on Youtube, it would probably destroy the servers permanently
.
-
I wonder if Metheny dyes his hair. I mean, he's like 60.
-
"so, who is the other piano player (besides KJ)?"
Brad Mehldau I reckon. I saw BM turn around on the stool and tear a piece off some idiot with a noisy camera at the end of a ballad when I saw him with Metheny.
-
Good grief!....he has dyed his hair!

Not to him. He sets the bar pretty high for everybody and especially himself.

I think the serious listeners will still hear the artist and value them as much as before, even if its a representation that's not up to the artists' standards. It's unavoidable at this point, but maybe Pat is right... It may eventually be seen as uncool enough to dissuade most people from doing it.
Have to admit though, from the point of view of a fan who is also a player, the more variations on metheny's classic tunes I hear, the richer my life is, and the greater insight into how he does what he does, clams and all. But I totally get his point and wouldn't want it done to me. So, I benefit from the rudeness of others. A conundrum.
I'm okay with the hair. Not many people appreciate looking older. Wait til you get there before you get whipped up about it. Time flies by.

I don't think there will ever be a way to stop the recording through social pressure alone. The technology is getting too stealthy.
In a few years, people will sit at a show in their Google iGlasses or whatever, blink twice, and video and audio will be recorded and instantly streamed to the Internet. You'll never know who is recording what.
-
Pat is starting to sound like a grouchy old man.

His rant against Kenny G was fun and Kenny's a soft target. But now Youtube? It's 2013, Pat. Rudy Van Gelder isn't cutting jazz albums in 2 - 3 hour sessions anymore. Deal with it.
-
It's not YouTube.
It's the human delivery mechanism.
Someone with no respect for the artist's wishes uploads a video.
Basic civility.
Courtesy.
Politeness.
Goodwill.
Respect.
and so on and so forth.
-
I'm sure the technology exists, somewhere, where they could block, scramble, delete, or somehow stop this activity.
Of course, all those who do this would scream bloody murder that their right to violate somebody else's rights are being infringed upon.
Can't have that!
IMO
