Oh man, I also feel like I gotta comment on this, was just listening to it yesterday. The whole album is a masterclass on how to play changes and blues, a lifetimes supply of lines, a transcribers dream, really.. But yeah, the title track, again, sublime soloing, but when Dizzy starts to sing near the end, it really gets me, don't understand why something so joyous could bring me close to tears! And that ending, "On the su-nny ...... on the sha-dy ....." just one of my favorite moments in all Jazz. Thanks for mentioning this, and providing the link. Gee, just imagine, some of you may be hearing this for the first time! I envy you.....

OK, the link is below, but first, please forgive the provocative nature of my opening post where I suggest that Wes M is the only "must" for sax players
I was being a bit cheeky and managed to get some strong opinions from some sax guys. I came clean around post #30 and admitted I was winding them up a bit, no-one seemed to mind.... (I don't usually go trolling around other sites like this, honest! ......

I wish I had saved the link I saw a youtube of a Sonny Rollins interview and he was asked why he used guitar players instead of piano player so much. Gist of his answer was the piano has such a big sound it gets in the way a lot. The the guitar fits in better to the band.

Was at a Rollins after gig chat with the audience recently where Rollins took questions from the audience for 90 mins. Interestingly, in all that time talking mainly about his past and mentioning dozens of great players, he seemed to point out two players that he spoke reverentially about. One was Elvin Jones and the other was Wes Montgomery, who he actually seemed lost for words when trying to describe, eventually just shaking his head and saying "Wes was an absolute master!".

At my top : Paul Desmond.
Stan Getz, Lee Konitz, Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Zoot Sims, Barney Wilen, Sonny Rollins, Jerome Sabbagh, Hank Mobley, Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Giuffre, Joshua Redman, John Coltrane. Fela Kuti, in another style.

I love Mark Turners playing and some of Seamus Blake's stuff is inspiring too. Jessie Davis is another player who I have listened to quite a bit.
I love Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, Trane, Bird, Paul Desmond. When I play gigs with either a singer or a sax player I notice that the audience is much more attentive and drawn into the performance.

the last new discovery I made was Walt Weiskopf (you can see him at smalls sometimes) - I think "See The Pyramid" is his last album (2010). I like his Coltrane-like tenor sound but he has his own style.

Charlie Parker
John Coltrane
Wayne Shorter
Stanley Turrentine
Paul Desmond
Michael Brecker
Joe Henderson

Lately I've been into Kenny Garrett, he's a flippin' monster...
