Anyone listening to Jimmy Raney or his son Doug Raney? I have been looking for a Jimmy Raney video for many years with no success. Does anyone have any info or contacts for videos for these guys?

    videos...no...i've never run across any...

jimmy's my #1. i love everything he ever commited to tape-- just a classy, fluid, beautiful player. the master. and doug-- wow, a real chip off the old block. their album "stolen moments" is a must have...

it's great to see someone else mention this underappreciated player-- he should be named in the same breath as wes and kessel and martino et. al.

I also have Jimmy as my #1. However, Doug is now running a close 2nd. I am in the process of transcribing some of Doug's releases and am Particularly fond of his version of "I'm Old Fashioned" via his "Back In New York" release. The cd also has "The Touch of Your Lips", "SkyLark" and a few other really melodic tunes and Doug plays them all beautifully. I am also very impressed with his comping ability. I wish he would do a tour in the USA so I could see him live. I believe his personal residence is in Denmark and he stays pretty busy in Europe.

sadly, we lose a lot of jazz musicians to europe because they can actually make a living doing it there and not have to succumb to the dentist office smooth jazz record just to pay the bills.

the raney's are someone you should check out, aPAULo...

For those of you who are interested in Jimmy Raney, I just finished listening to the new Jimmy Raney release, "Live At Bradley's". It is a great CD featuring only Jimmy Raney and a bass player, Bill Takas. Jimmy makes it all happen with him as the major melody instrument as well as the only one playing changes & some tasty chord melody in addition to his endless melodic Bebop lines. As you might expect, this cd showcases a master Bebop guitarist doing what he loved most. This release is NOT a bunch of old releases added together, every tune is live and recorded at Bradley's (New York club) in 1974. Give your ear a treat and get this one while it is available. best wishes

Oh man, that's not good news at all. Definitely very sad.

As far as seeing Jimmy Raney play, check out Youtube. I've found a number of performances after searching his name on the site. It's some good stuff.

That is just a shame to hear about Doug. Not in his father's class as a player imo, never the less, he was a wonderful player, and I greatly enjoy the duo disc I have of them. I never had a son, but the thought of being able to play with your son on record like that just warms the heart.

Hopefully he can pull out of it before it is too late.

My friend Adam and I spent a few days in Copenhagen during Christmas of 2005. While there at a bar one night, we ran into and had the privilege of meeting Doug Raney. All I can say is, what a hell of a guy! He was one of the greatest men I have ever met in my entire life. He taught me more about life and Danish women in two hours time than anyone else has ever taught me in a lifetime. He loves his jazz music almost as much as his Carlsberg!!!! He kept me on my toes the entire night, and enticed me with stories about his past that I still find myself laughing about even until this day. It is sad to hear that Doug is not doing so well, and hope that he is able to become the man once more that he was in years past. I wish Doug all the best, and look forward to the day that I will be able to cross paths with him once again.

    IMPORTANT INFO!!!!

    Dear fellow musician.

I have deleted my post after talking to Jon, DR's brother. He is trying to find out more about he's condition and situation.

Jon, DR's brother is going to write You about exactly how he is and until this has been done, please consider my last post as inaccurate.

My friend Chris told me of the bad news about our friend Doug. He wasn't just a friend but he was a legend. I met him once in Copenhagen. I'll never forget the blue jacket he wore with "Jimmy" written on it. He told me it was in memory of his late father Jimmy. I'll never forget his great company and the great amount of laughs.
    Here's to you Doug

Thanks Tumbleweed. I really appreciate your personal response to my inquiry into Doug's well-being. Meeting Doug that night was such a special treat, and I would love the opportunity to be able to meet with him again. Doug is such a special person, and I would love more than anything to be able to at least contact him or even meet up with him over a Carlsberg in the near future. After leaving the bar that Christmas night in Copenhagen, we said our farewells, and departed each others company with sadness. We then jumped into a car with some Danish girls that we met that night who gave us a ride back to out hotel. While driving back, we saw Doug walking alone with a Carlsberg in one hand and a cheese pizza in the other. Seeing Doug walking away like that was like watching a cowboy ride off into the sunset, so much so that I could almost even hear Doug whisper, "Happy trails, until we meet again." It is because of this final vision of Doug and knowing what a treat it was to speak with him and get to know him that unforgettable night that I hope to know more about his current situation and his well-being. And if possible, I would even love being able to personally contact him to give him a friendly hello and to wish him well. Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated. Thanks so much Tumbleweed for your time and help in this matter.

    amen brother,

you said it best. Doug is trully a man of great character. He once told me that life isn't something you should take for granted. He said to me "life is a chance, you must flow through the river of life as if its playing to my music". Saying good bye to him was hard because it was more than saying good bye to a friend, but like saying good bye to a father. I will always remember when he said "I got something going on upstairs, i check on you guys later", I remember thinking to myself, wow, there's a man of integrity and a man with a fan. This guy was everybody's favorite, its as if he knew everyone in Copenhagen. I really appreciate the talk I had with Doug. I would certainly share a couple of Carlsberg's with him if I had the chance.

    your friend

    Hello Gentleman:

If I could be him, I would say something witty like:
"News of my death are greatly exaggerated..."

It's nice to see that he has so many fans and well wishers. If you like each of you can send me a message to him to my personal email here and I forward it on.

Doug has been through a lot in the last 3 years. But currently he is living in an apt and is ok as of yesterday. So we can all breath easy.

Tumbleweed I appreciate your initiating the deletion to keep the google spider bots off your post and me from having to re-explain to other people inquiring about old news. But let's use this as a lesson on the modern age about how personal info delivered can be taken out of context or have unseen effects.

Generally, I thank all of you for keeping the flame alive for my talented and legendary father and brother. I have been releasing free video content as mentioned. There was something last night that was supposed to be there but somehow it is not. Look for it tonite. Some of the members of this board visit my board and my blog from time to time. I often given extra info that you might not see elsewhere. Go to my website www.jonraney.com and click the forum and blog links. Feel free to drop by.

Thanks again to everyone for the well wishes and concern

    Best

    Hi all
Doug is doing ok. As brother Jon points out he has an apt these days. He did a fine gig last friday at the christiania jazzclub with old buddy Tomas Franck on tenor and young rhythm section. He does the old songs that he has always done; end of a love affair, what's new, impressions. Maybe the old milestones. He sounds so reliably like himself on that old L7 with the P90.
Just a sweet dude and a crazy ladies' friend. He will always be ready to tell the story about when Jimmy took him the Pat Martino Consciousness sessions. Or this one: "Dexter Gordon was at one of my father's gigs at Bradley's, and walked up to him and said: you sound just like Doug!" And both men cracked up. That was usually the other way around of course.
Last summer he did scramble a bit and lost a few gigs; now he's back in shape.
    Cheers, Mads
