Present day line arrays are direct decendents of the Wall of Sound.

As an old fossil I did hear the Dead thru the WOS twice. Without exception the best live sound I ever heard.

Wall of Sound was before my time. Saw the Dead/Garcia well over a hundred times. They actually had to have two complete systems so while one show was going on the second system was being set up at the next venue. Their road manager Sam Cutler (formally with the Stones) said the Grateful Dead played some of the most amazing music he ever heard but were absolutely clueless when it came to making a buck.

People described the Wall of Sound as being incredibly clear…not overall loud…you could easily converse with someone and also sounding consistent wherever you were in the venue as long as you were in front of the wall.

There are people making mini replicas of the system.
First "Wall" show for me was Boston Gahden. It was clear but in that venue it was loud too. Though not as loud as Ten Years After with Skynard as the opener lol. And I wonder why my wife says I need a hearing aid!
