Herb looks like he thinks the audience might throw a tomato at him.

That’s the look of a guy at a jazz jam who spots a new arrival pushing a Marshall half stack toward the stage.

Interesting strap situation: strap runs from tailpiece to beyond the nut, but he's not wearing the strap.
Wes wore a strap that way.
I've seen a few pics of Herb that way too, usually when standing with the OP trio.

I remember when Herb ran an ad in Guitar Player wanting to buy a George Van Epps String Damper. He wanted no ringing open strings. Barney Kessel made ringing open strings a hallmark of his style.

Someone told me the lever part of his dampening device was to turn the truss rod because he adjusted it so often. True?

No - at least not on the ones I've seen. Here's a shot of one sitting on its backside. There's nothing under the replacement truss rod cover. There's just a hinged damper on the top with a lever to position it.

Here’s the headstock of Herb’s 175 with the final Van Eps he used on it.

Bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis pulled a practical joke on their Oscar Peterson Trio bandmate, Oscar Peterson. They cross-dressed as each other—wearing wigs and makeup—and called Peterson to their hotel room. When he arrived to discuss a "gig," they stood there stoically, though Peterson kept his cool. Oscar was a tough customer!

I attended show Herb did in San Francisco a very long time ago.

There was one vacant seat in the place, at a table with a woman of about Herb's age.

Turned out, the seat was vacant because Herb had just gone on stage and the woman was his wife. Very nice.

And yes, he used the Van Eps string damper that night.

My L50, purchased new in '64, did not have a strap button. Still doesn't. Straps were sold with the loop thing to go around the headstock.

So when you play an open string with that thing down, what do you get? A thunk?

The string will still sound, but it’s muted. What it’s really good at is stopping sympathetic ringing of strings behind where they are fretted.
