John Chiodini is not a name I am familiar with, and can’t say I recall him being mentioned on this forum before, but I was struck by his playing on this video, and was surprised and how good he could make the relatively inexpensive Epi Joe Pass sound.

He’s the perfect partner for John Pisano’s playing, and has made me reassess the Epi guitar. I imagine he has changed the pickup, but perhaps not. I also like what he plays - very tasteful soloing, comping, and - what I enjoyed most - his occasional single-note counterpoint to Pisano’s soloing.

    Any John Chiodini stories?

You can see from this that jazz can be played on any guitar and the rest is in the fingers and imagination.

I hadn't heard the name before either but he seems to have had quite a career

Yeah, he's clearly a top-level pro, much in demand. Great player. The three of them in the video made a great trio. Such a pity John is no longer with us.

Yes it’s a nice guitar, has good bones as they say. Hard to tell if the pickup has been upgraded.

The Epi Classic 57 is not a BAD pickup, but I changed over to Stew Mac Parson Street Alnico 2’s, which were excellent.

I had an Epiphone Joe Pass in the 1990's, a nice guitar for the low price, but I sold it and got a Guild.

Years later, I recommended the Epiphone Joe Pass as a good inexpensive guitar to a left handed friend, who bought one new and plays it to this day.

John Chiodini with a trio, backed up singer Eliane Miles here in Southern California about 5 years ago, thus I saw Chiodini many times.

Really solid player that played in the style I favor, uplifting tasteful swing.

Friendly guy too and we would discuss jazz guitar and jazz in general during breaks and once after a gig at Miles home.

Miles couldn't get enough work here in So Cal, so I believe she moved to the Big Apple. Not sure if John went along or not.

PS: This Ms. Miles is NOT the native American singer \ actress. She is a first-rate jazz singer. Chiodini and Miles version of the Monk song, Well, You Needn't is something.

I was very impressed by John Chiodini's album with Buddy DeFranco, "Free Sail". I looked for more stuff by him, but he only released one album as a leader called "Weightless", which i don't remember anything about.

Seems like he was a West Coast player, like Pisano, so I never heard anything about him in NY. They sound great on the You Tube video.

They certainly do. Relaxed too, like old buddies enjoying themselves.

I had one when I lived in DC. Purchased at Guitar Center in Falls Church, VA. They had three: a great one (mine), a mid, and a dog. Try before you buy!

Sold it when I got my first Eastman.

Always good advice, but alas not always possible to follow.

Inexpensive guitar and an inexpensive Roland Cube COSM amp, looked like a Cube 60 or 80, which he chose over the Acoustic Image rig. That's often the case with pros- "does it work good enough? OK. 1,2,3,4..."
