I first heard about Shane Theriot when I lived in New Orleans. (His book "New Orleans Funk Guitar" is excellent.) I subscribe to his YouTube channel and check him out from time to time.
This video is about his teacher at GIT, Dan Gilbert. Interesting stuff about music and life.

He has a really good YouTube channel. He is also the musical director of the Live From Daryl's House program.

Dan Gilbert was one of my classroom teachers at GIT back in 1983/84--which I think is a few years before Shane got there. I didn't have Dan as my private teacher, unfortunately. (You didn't get to pick, in general. Every student had a weekly private teacher assigned to them.) Dan's wife worked at the school running the Player's Lounge, which was a tiny room or nook where she sold guitar strings and picks and snacks and stuff. She was a real sweetheart (sorry, I can't recall her name).
I would say that back in 1983 Dan wasn't the best player on the teaching staff (which isn't saying much. The teachers included Howard Roberts (on a visiting schedule), Don Mock, Keith Wyatt, Ron Eschete, Joe Diorio, Steve Trovato, Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, others...really an amazing group of players/teachers). But I would say also that Danny was one of the best teachers and best humans in the school. Really a remarkable guy.
