    With Ulf Wakenius .

Effortless melodic playing by Metheny .

Long, long ago I mistakenly thought he was overrated ...

But I later saw some clips with Brecker !

And his practice routine [ with Bach and tons of arpeggios and key changes improv./etude ].

But his chops and time here are waaayyy up there and he sounds more' free ' than ever.

And I think this one with Ulf shows Metheny sharper than ever including effortless virtuoso but still melodic [!] playing .

Perhaps not really Jazz for purists but maybe that's why I like it .

The comping by Wakenius is really cool also.

I really like Pat’s rhythm sound - super transparent. Presumably he backs off the volume a bit and hits harder

I think that Ulf is playing a 1976-8 Ibanez Model 2342 or a very similar looking Aria.

He played an Aria LP copy at that time. Probably from the same factory as an Ibanez 2342.

That BSL is from over 20 years ago?

But I agree I saw Metheny’s one man show a couple of years ago and it was inspiring to say the least…even a couple of my non musician friends were awestruck

I thought this thread was going to be about his forthcoming album 'Side-Eye III', out February 27th.

He's always been getting better. Listen to some of those early albums like "Bright Size Life" and then listen to the solo on "Third Wind" or "Question and Answer."

Hell, listen to "Bright Size Life" from the album, and then the version from the live trio album from the 00's.

His playing unquestionably has advanced. But that first record is still my favourite. I think it has a freshness to it. I like the trio format too.

A new inexpensive black Epiphone 'Les Paul' would probably sound and look similar to Ulf's 'Les Paul' copy. Especially, if you install a better sounding pickup of your choice.

I don't know about stealing the show, cause the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, but yeah, Ulf's comping here is stellar.

    What happened to Side-eye 2?

I enjoyed his last Side-eye album very much.

He is one of those artists that never stands still or rests on his laurels. But I agree for sheer freshness and energy it's hard to beat those first albums. They were stellar and highly influential.

    ^^^This.

There is probably more PM material out there that I dislike than that I actually like. But the stuff that I do like I tend to love ...primarily for its audacity, and for its overt demonstration of Pat's willingness to explore what is possible, irrespective of how closely it matches some hypothetical public's idea of what his music is "about".

Any artist that could have released New Chautauqua and Song X within 7 years of each other is okay in my book.
