If you wanna swing hard put your foot at 1 and 3 (search Hal Galper half time feel video) and start playing drums, independence exercises and stuff like that, it really changed my life

    I agree with Patrick here.

Barry Harris said Pat your foot on 1 and 3

I do think there’s more to it than that haha

I agree with the foot is more imposrtant than your hands (Al di Meola quote btw) but playing some kinda drum/perc/independence with your hands really helps, Pattitucci says that its mandatory for all his students, in places like Cuba, Brazil, Venezuela or in the Flamenco world... you better know how to tap or clap some grooves before you put a note on top

I recently saw a video of a well known band doing a cover of a Santana song. In my opinion they didn't do a very good job. Years of playing with Latin percussionists apparently has conditioned the Santana rhythm section to a great degree which might not be obvious to other musicians. I don't know if the members of Santana tap their feet but in some of their performance videos there is a great deal of rhythmic body motion (dance?) that fits precisely with their music.

Oddly enough, just about every workshop instructor I've had (all working players, one a career Navy Bands veteran) suggested tapping on 2 and 4. Myself, if I tap, it's toe down on 1&3 and heel-down on 2&4, with the heel getting the slight emphasis. And if I reverse the order, it's still strong 2&4. And I think I swing OK. (And FWIW, I've long done basic time-keeping with brushes on my Laptop Snare--the right hand is constant, which helps in jam circles where time might wander. I also notice in the Tuba Skinny video that the two guitarists' right hands are right in synch--which I've also seen in the rhythm players in traditionally-configured GJ bands.)

There's a video of the Great Guitars with each one tapping differently.

I notice that some big band horn players don't tap at all and swing great.

One of my very favorite groups!
