Who played guitar in the United Nations Band (was: Afro Cuban Allstars)

Stray thought- I saw Dizzy Gillespie a year or two before his death. As I remember he didn’t play much, but the band cooked, including a young guitar player who did some excellent, extended soloing.

who was in Dizzy’s band in 91-92?

When I saw Dizzy in 1989 in London with his United Nations Orchestra, he had Ed Cherry on guitar.

I’m pretty sure the Afro Cuban Allstars is a different group, but Ed Cherry played for Gillespie from 1978 to 1992.

Way back in the 80s I recorded Gillespie when he was broadcast live, over the radio, playing at the Monterey jazz festival. What stood out to me was the guitar playing. There was one solo that was just insane. I never took the time to determine who that was, but I know now.
