    Hi all,

I have been wondering for years what guitar Pat Martino was playnig in Don Patterson's "Boppin' and Burnin'", and "Funk You!" albums.
But only now I thought I could ask here :P
I think around that time he was playing a Johnny Smith at some point, and eventually an L-5 as well.

    Any ideas?

No idea, but Pat’s album Baiyina was recorded mid-1968 which is around the same time, and the cover shows him playing a Gibson of some description (L5?).

What guitar was Pat Martino using in Don Patteron's albums?-img_3423-jpeg

    That's a good question.
I'm a huge fan of both musicians and have all their records save for a few of Pat's last recordings but not sure of the answer.
As has been mentioned that's around the time he had a Johnny Smith and L-5.
It's hard to go by album cover pics as they're not necessarily indicative of what was used on a particular session.
But he's pictured w a Smith on the Young Guns live recording w organist Gene Ludwig from '68 which was taken in a club so he's almost certainly using that guitar on that session.
It's hard to tell but I should go back and take a close listen to the Patterson records but I'm leaning towards the Smith as he's pictured w it frequently from '68 on non album covers.

Don't forget to stuff it full of upholstery filling.

I'd also like to know what guitar Pat Martino used in those years.
It's likely (but not certain) that he stuffed a lot of absorbent material into the guitar body... something no one dares to do on a valuable hollowbody guitar.
Another interesting thing is that there doesn't seem to be any video of Pat Martino recorded before 1979 - 1980.
