Most music fans have likely never heard of The Whippoorwills, a late 40s/early 50s band that featured the fabulous guitarist Roy Lanham and Doug Dalton, a pioneering swing electric mandolin player who counted the great Jethro Burns among his fans. They sang in close harmony vocals - like Manhattan Transfer - and their swing solos and arrangements are first rate. These are some of the best sounding recordings of the Whipps I've heard. Downloadable with apps like YouTube to mp3.

How embarrassing - I hadn't and I actually have a band with the same name.... Although we are more New Orleans than swing.
Lovely stuff....

Georgia Brown certainly chose the perfect name for her occupation.

Roy was well-respected for his chord melody playing and he was an "early-adapter" of Fender solid bodies.

When is AI going to start automatically transcribing these great guitar solos?!
-
Songsterr has a function for doing this from YouTube videos. I have given it a try and it was pretty far from perfect. That may all change quickly though.

I've known about (and have been listening to) Roy & the Whippoorwills for about 10 years now. Amazing guitarist, right up there with the other hillbilly jazz cats like Jimmy Bryant. Incredible speed those 2 guys had.
