He started out in jazz but ended up in R&B. Shirley was in the Billy Kyle Trio right after WW2. Kylie was a Philadelphia pianist who recorded the tracks below as a leader right after he got out of the army. The BKT seems to have had 5 members () on some of these recordings, according to BillieHolidaySongs.com...

Has someone ever heard about Jimmy Shirley ?-jimmy_shirley_credits-jpg

While in Kyle’s combo, he backed some of the greats in the '40s, including Ella -

    and Billie -

There's some confusion in the documentation about who was playing guitar on these. On one website, Tiny Grimes and John Collins are cited as the guitarists on these Decca sessions. But I'm 99% sure that the above 3 are all Jimmy Shirley on guitar.

    Surely it's Shirley?

I'm imagining John Collins saying, "Sure, go ahead and call me, just don't call me Shirley!"

Oh yea! I had this cassette Blue Guitar, a compilation of tunes by all the jazz greats, Joe Pass, Sco, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall etc, and one of the tracks I really really liked and even transcribed was by Jimmy Shirley. Could not find any info on him at the time. I really dig his style, I wish he had done more recordings.
