She got to the top by hard work and talent.

She definitely was a hard worker, but if you compare her pitch in her live performances to her records, you realize she couldn't sing in tune without the aid of pitch control devices in the studio.

Slight Digression: If you've never heard Bill Frisell (with Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron) cover Madonna's "Live To Tell" you're in for a treat. One of the most impassioned and dramatic performances I can ever recall hearing.
