Hey, I woulda slept on a lot of couches to get to the top, if I had thought about it.

Come to think of it there's a mustard yellow vinyl couch probably still out there somewhere that still has PTSD from my college years. Can't say it enhanced my career, though.

She definitely was a hard worker, but if you compare her pitch in her live performances to her records, you realize she couldn't sing in tune without the aid of pitch control devices in the studio.
She used a lot of good songwriters, and I enjoyed playing her songs on gigs with singers who could sing in tune.

Slight Digression: If you've never heard Bill Frisell (with Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron) cover Madonna's "Live To Tell" you're in for a treat. One of the most impassioned and dramatic performances I can ever recall hearing.
