Now everybody, go to see Julian Lage in Joe Lovano's Paramount Quartet gigs in US!
They are going around Your country from now til April 13th.
Gigs - Joe Lovano
I saw them in February in gorgeous G Livelab, Tampere, Finland.
Astonishing happening. I haven't had words to write about it here. My pal (big Lage aficionado) was so touched that he couldn't speak after the concert. I have never seen a band of players who create the music in the moment. Go and see!

Sadly, no NYC….

Yeah, he is outstanding in this setting (as he usually is). The show i caught, Lovano seemed more than willing to let him take the spotlight.
... And judging from the applause, there were a Lot of guitar players in the audience

Oh, man, whatta gig!!!

They're at the Dakota 4/1 and 4/2. I'm seeing the second set 4/1. Last week I saw Stanley Jordan. Been a good few weeks.

I saw them this weekend at the Big Ears festival in Knoxville. It was a highlight of a great festival. I saw Julian Lage in at least one othershow, Bill Frissel in 3 different sessions, and a lot of other wonderful music.

no love for Philly...

The sax player that I play with a couple times a week was a school band director during his working career. He had a bunch of other band directors went out east on a grant to study arranging, etc. I believe this was at Berklee; Joe Lovano was scheduled to be the instructor. He walked into the room, looked at them and said "you guys are all school band directors?" They all said yes. He said "hang on a minute." He walked out of the room and never came back.
I am looking forward to this show. I've seen Julian Lage as a leader but I have not seen him as a side man, which may be loosely speaking in this case. It's always interesting to hear how a musician adapts to that different role.

Bummer story.

Well, that was a marvelous set. The highlight for me was a beautiful reading of Charlie Haden's "First Song." Ten minutes of grace. And a great seat.
Julian's playing was fluid as ever. His tone with this guitar, and what appeared to be the house Twin, was rounder and smoother than it often has been. Looked like flatwounds on the guitar. Joe's tone was beautiful, more so than I had expected from recordings I have heard (mostly on Youtube, which may explain that). The bass was a little under-mixed where I was seated, but the interplay between all four was amazing. Intense listening.

Lage looked intensively too but not to the audience but other band members, often smiling with Calhoun when they found the same note.

Yeah, Joe really looks at the audience.

There was a story about the quartet in Jazz Times.
Joe Lovano's Paramount Quartet Hitting the Road in Europe - JazzTimes
”(…) music just poured out of everyone in a natural way (…)”
In concert it seemed and felt like that too!
