Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson : must watch

These two guys were from another planet. The talent is incredible. The improv competition starts just before 5 minutes but the whole thing is worth watching.

That's faster than the speed of thought. Something is channeling into their bodies and controlling their playing.

Some people in the future figured out how to use AI via a time machine and overtake their brains. Scratch that. Some AI in the future solved the constraints of time and did this.

Either way, enjoy it.

I heard a few of Joe's pet licks in there so it's not 100% channeled from the ether, but man, those two were indeed astounding, creative players on their instruments.

I imagine Oscar has a lot of pet licks as well. When you’re a piano player, though, you have 2 hands to mess around with, so you can always mix it up a little more.

Oscar’s musical vocabulary had to be one of the greatest in jazz. Art Tatum could probably outplay him, but if you listen to Art a lot, he had a lot more stock phrases. Oscar’s musical sense and musicality were broader, IMO.

That these guys could play together and challenge each other musically at this level, while remaining entertaining and accessible, is a testament to their incredible talent, honed over many years of constant playing and absorbing musical knowledge.
