Susan was an amazing player and collaborator swell as a kind and empathetic person. She will be sorely missed. RIP.

From NPR: "I was doing country gigs and listening to Albert Ayler and people at the gigs would tell me I sounded different for some reason. When I got into Ornette Coleman, most of the musicians I knew in Houston didn't want to play with me anymore because it was like I was out-of-tune or something."

I knew Susan from Baltimore. We shared a few bills together, and I played a quartet gig with her right before I moved to Berlin. I also went over to her apartment one afternoon, where we played together, just the two of us. She'd do that with anyone who asked.
She was the real deal, absolutely. If you were a musician she was your friend and ally. Just about the most dedicated musician I ever knew. Her knowledge was endless. She'd play with NYC jazzers one night and a lesbian rock-a-billy band the next, and make everyone sound great. She was also fierce antifa.
It seems like the Baltimore community is a bit gutted right now. It was quite sudden.

How sad...
Saw her live at the Jazz Festival Berlin 2021 with her Quintet, playing music from the album Pedernal:
