Ed Bickert did an album with Jim Hall's wife Jane Hall called With A Song In My Heart. There is some great playing there.

Yeah!! I love this version of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. The playing is gorgeous, and it sounds like Ed.

A few discographies list Chris Flory in the credits too. He's a stellar player who could have done this just as well. But I think the chording and overall tone are Bickert. IIRC, Flory plays a noncut L7 and has a brighter, woodier tone too.

Huh? From what I've read, it was a Valentine's present from Jane to Jim. Jim loved it, apparently, and played it often. It was put out posthumously after Jim's death. It's a heartfelt and rather lovely record, although Jane is not a professional singer. Ed's playing is... well, Ed. Just beautiful and sensitive.

Jane and Jim were very best friends through his whole life, from what I understand.

(in addition to being spouses, of course)

A bad joke, just seemed a bit odd that someone married to a jazz guitarist would make a duo album with another jazz guitarist.

Interesting. I know next to nothing about their relationship- and why should we- other than that Jane was a psychoanalyst professionally. IIRC she wrote a book or two about it, although I don't know if those were published as Jane Hall or by her maiden name.

Is there a biography of Jim published? I haven't seen one. Haven't seen one for Ed, either, although many tribute writings by other musicians and people who worked with him. There's a funny story of Ed recording tracks for a Wes Montgomery tribute record, which I couldn't find today, and Steve Wallace posted a very nice tribute.

There’s an interesting documentary about Jim Hall available on youtube, his daughter Devra is credited as the writer.

That whole album is just wonderful but yes, Berkeley Square is the standout track. Bickert’s part is right up my alley and I just have to learn it (if anyone has a chart then I’d be much obliged).

Speaking of "who is related to whom," you guys know that Rosemary Clooney is George Clooneys aunt, right?
