Wow that’s so old Tuck doesn’t even have gray hair.

Saw Tuck with Patti last year at the Dakota in Minneapolis. GREAT show. They just celebrated something like 47 years of marriage, btw.

He is really my role model for playing with a singer. The communication he has with Patti is almost telepathic. And he never gets in the way of the singer or the song.

Wow, I did not know that there were any videos from the New Varsity in Palo Alto California!

I lived near Tuck and Patty and studied with Tuck for a few years in about 79-81.

I saw him so many times in this era, and I actually played many times in the courtyard at the New Varsity around this time myself.

He was a fantastic teacher and really supported and encouraged me as a player, even inviting me to record him and Patty live direct from the mixing board at one of their gigs.

I still have those cassette tapes as well as some lessons that I recorded.

I was surprised that his name never turned up on this forum; if you don't know him check him out.

Tuck studied math at Stanford University and was the most systematic musician that I have ever met; he didn't get that good by mere chance.

    Thanks for posting the video.

Hey Neighbor! I've been in the Bay Area since 1981 and stumbled into T&P at the Monterey Whaling Company on a Tuesday or Wednesday night (no cover!) and could not believe what I was seeing. I've seen them more than a few times in the Bay Area, including at the New Varsity. By the way, Michael Hedges was also playing in the same venues back then.
    Regards,
    Joe

    Hi Joe,

When I started studying music in around 79' one of the teachers said "you must check out Tuck Andress at "La Boheme" in Saratoga".

I went to see Tuck and Patty and asked if i could get some lessons and he said yes!

I also played regularly at the Monterey Whaling Company in the 80's with the band "A Little Night Music" with vocalist Nate Pruit, as well as in a duo with Nate.

    Were you possibly there?

Amazing that the Dakota is still in operation while so many clubs in that area have come and gone. We did this Dennis Kirk corporate gig one year in the late 90's in Rush City. Afterwards we checked into our hotel and then went down to the Dakota and blew about half of our guarantee drinking whiskey and watching some great jazz.

This changes my perception of Tuck Andress. I've always heard him as part of the duo. Here alone: so good, such a long time ago. Those harmonics all over the fretboard are some of the earliest I'm aware of.

He has some solo work out. I think my favorite is Reckless Precision from about 1990. I can't seem to get a link to the entire album, so here are a few of my favorites. Louie Louie is absolutely mindblowing!!

Especially amazing since the Dakota (the current downtown Minneapolis venue, not the old one in St. Paul in the mall) is such a damned awkward room and the rent must be expensive as can be. But somehow they keep going. As a couple it can easily be a $250-300 evening between tickets a food/drinks for just 1 set, so we don't go often. But they are the main game in town for national acts, along with Crooner's which tends to focus more on local talent and often departs from jazz.

Well, be that as it may, Tuck is a remarkable talent on the guitar and we do often seem to overlook him on the forum because he doesn't play traditional straightahead jazz in New York/small group combo type settings. It would be interesting for Frank Vignola to have him as a guest at Guitar Night; I have never heard Tuck in that kind of setting.

I like somethings Tuck does but some of his stuff I don't care for. This cut with Mcferrin does not do much for me rhythmic thing that just goes but to me nowhere. I like the solo Over the Rainbow nice. He certainly is not someone I am going to seek out and listen to as such but a great player.
