It almost slipped under my radar but Kreisberg is touring Europe with his organ trio and the second show was in Holland. He’s a monster player and I just had to be there.

He played at a nice club that held about 200 people. It was packed. Jonathan took to the stage armed with a Deluxe Reverb, a Quad Reverb, his pedalboard and of course his battered 175. I felt privileged to be there. And to see and hear that iconic instrument up close.
I appreciate Kreisberg the most when he plays chord melody stuff. It’s easy to overlook that given his ferocious ability as a lead player. Apparently he started out as a shredder once and he brought some of that to jazz. For my tastes there was a bit too much hyperfast weedily-weedily going on. It’s when he brought things down and played chord melody that his gift shone through the most. His command of harmony as well as the guitar is breathtaking.
Last week I saw Oz Noy and both players use effects for their core tones. Kreisberg never had a pure 175-into-Deluxe clean tone going and sounded more like a keyboard player. His tone could have come from almost any instrument with 6 strings and a pickup. It’s interesting that what you see (a very traditional choice of a Gibson jazzbox and a Fender amp) is not at all what you hear (which is very synth-like).
Admission was a mere €18. Heck of a deal. Glad I was there.

So, was that you who took home his guitars truss-rod cover as a souvenir?
