Never heard this magnificent Paul Desmond solo before. The young Paul has the compositional flow of the older Desmond with an urgency and propulsive flow he didn't have in his later playing.Brubeck is fine until he goes into "Dave clearing the forrest mode."

I like Brubeck's sound, it's like classical jazz. Mozart improvising... I don't know if that makes sense, but I enjoy it. Especially on All The Things You Are, this tune seems to go classical often.

if you like chamber jazz check out the Modern Jazz Quartet

Also some of my very favorite Paul Desmond is from the Jazz at Oberlin concert which I think is also 1953?
That was the first jazz album I bought. I have never had anything but love for the ultra cool, more polished Paul Desmond stuff, but you appreciate it more when you hear him cut loose and smoke a little bit, but still sound like himself!

Oberlin is a great recording!
There's a zillion Brubeck lps and I have almost all of them even though Dave's playing grates on me at times.
But they're worth listening to just for Desmond.
If you like Paul a bit edgy this is a good example...

I saw Brubeck with his sons live circa 1979 and he was quite good. He often gets a little heavy handed for my taste. I saw an Andre Previn / Oscar Peterson interview years ago where Oscar jokingly said something like Dave's heavy touch wrecked pianos and that nobody wanted to follow him in the club on the same instrument after a week of piano pounding.
Desmond never disappoints. "The City is Crying" from Jazz Impressions of Japan is particularly lovely as is Jazz Antigua with Jim Hall.
