In my experience, this is the number one Potential Train Wreck I hear at jam sessions.
Didn't realize this was an old thread and that I had literally already posted this exact thing several months ago.

Leaving this post up though, because with the Christmas season coming up ... IT MUST BE SAID AGAIN.

This gets called at jam sessions in my neck of the woods, but mostly as a vocal number, so the keys vary depending on the singer. I couple of times, without a vocalist, it was in E minor (the key in the Jazz Standard Bible, something like a Real Book here in Japan that's used for spontaneous playing to enable everyone being on the same page, literally); I fiddled with some Gabor Szabo inspired open string ad-lib. There was one memorable jam a few years ago, however, with some horn players who blew the roof off the place with a piano trio. I was luckily sitting out and watching but I think I grasped for the first time how 3 beats can be felt as 2.

Here's what happened to a guy who called this tune once too many times at a jam session....

In the past, I've played 'My Fav Things' at wedding receptions, people seemed to like it and clap, probably because they know the tune.

But, I kept my improv simple and close to the melody notes.
