Exactly right. I practice unstructured free from atonalism. There’s of course highly structured varieties.

....and that's a very interesting thing about some Atonal music. You can sense it has a structure, but the challenge (and fun) is finding out what it is. You don't have the familiar V - I landmarks.

The first time I ever listened to Sonny Sharrock I was doing a "WTF?" But it can be strangely beautiful. Like this:
