Yeah Midnight at the Oasis is sexier than anything on the Top 40 list of the last decade. Maria Muldaur's voice is hot, hot, hot. And that guitar solo--wow.

I think producers back in the day had an idea of a 3-4 minute song. With a couple of vocal verses and choruses, not much room to stretch out, so guitarists had to get in there and make their point in a hurry.

    Jasaco,
I have always thought Paul's bass work on that song could almost stand alone.

This isn't a great guitar solo but it's a very nice one for its time---from Vince Taylor's "Brand New Cadillac." (The Clash covered this song much later.)

at 1:30 there's a very short guitar solo on one of my favorite Bowie tunes:

Wow, nice eye shadow there, David...

I love that song as well, in fact love most of David's stuff. He (and his producers, Tony' Visconti especially) knows how to use the instrumental parts in service of the song.

In fact, you could make an argument that the key to a great Bowie song is its guitar riff. Rebel, Rebel (which I think Bowie played himself), Ziggie Stardust (Mick Ronson), Fame, Golden Years (Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar), Let's Dance (SRV, David and possibly Nile Rodgers as well), and my personal favorite Scary Monsters, with Fripp's insane solos that rank among the very best ever laid down.
