I hope that I will be able to attend jams and sit in at gigs in about 1-2 years. Jazz is not really designed for instant gratification, it takes a lot of time even to become mediocre. I'm getting a lot of joy out of it however and I believe this is a life long project for me.

    Nice playing merceybeat!
The words in red describe me, Sredna. I'm at it for 2 and 1/2 years, quit for almost 1 year but came back. I sound mediocre when it comes to chord improv. The thinking makes it so slow. This past month I realized about some things refering to chord improv and asking in the forum have learned so many new things that it makes it difficult to think of all the possibilities when I'm on the guitar. My consolation is that now, at least, I can understand every explanation given in every thread when someone asks about chords and the possibilities to improvise over it/them.
Life long project. Yes, it is.

    Thanks Claudi much appreciated!
One of the main things I did when starting to play was learn how to milk that V7alt chord for all its worth! So I would just jam over a simple ii V I progression at a workable tempo! I would do this for hours! IMHO its not productive to even attempt songs with "complex changes" until you are comfortable with a Simple ii V I and a ii V i (This will come in time).
I had Autumn leaves on a loop. I would practice in G for hours on end! Then the next day I would practice it in C (giving a whole new position).
Once I was comfortable I moved to "Blue Bossa" with its Down a 5th change! Then I moved on to non resolving ii V progressions! Now I am tackiling the more complex material!
What I am saying is to take things very slowly, I have fun playing which to me is the most important goal!
If you have two guitarists trading over a simple ii V I progression its the most amazing buzz to slip those altered ideas in! I learnt loads this way!

PS I study theory seperate! Usually at the pool with an ice cold beer and no guitar!
