So I’ve been working through Harmony with Lego Bricks, which right now just means listening a lot.
But I’ve started working on tunes that have the Pennies Ending.
So, that’s the last eight of Pennies From Heaven:
ii (or IV) — iv — iii — VI7
ii — V — I turnaround
with some common variations … IV for two, bVII7 for iv, I to bVII in place of iii etc.
The list of tunes I have this change in from my list are …
The regular Pennies Ending
- Pennies From Heaven (last eight)
- All Of Me (last eight)
- Easy To Love (last eight)
- Heartaches (last eight)
- All Of You (last eight)
- It Could Happen To You (B and C sections)
- Night And Day (last eight of the A)
- All the Things (last eight)
- If I Were a Bell (last eight)
- and of course the last eight your typical jazz blues.
- Avalon
Modified Pennies Ending where rather than the last four resolving, we get II7 — ii - V …
- Dewey Square (bridge)
- But Not For Me (B and C)
- There Will Never Be Another You (B section)
- Donna Lee (B section)
Then a quick Pennies ending where we get ii - iv - iii VI - ii V … all in four measures …
- I Remember You (last four of the A)
- Love Walked In (last four of the B)
- Song Is You, The (last four of the A)
Would be very interested to hear other tunes where people have found this progression. This is something I’ve sort of been intellectually aware of and noticed casually, but never really spent much time practicing systematically. It’s been pretty helpful, I think, so I’ve been sorting some tunes out with some other common progressions I’ve found too. I’ll try to keep them going.Last edited by pamosmusic; 10-21-2024 at 01:52 PM.

so that's cool.

This might be of interest too. (But, it's a bit old nowadays.)

Man, yeah I see what you mean about Insights, Guy.
Ive gotten a ton out of Lego Bricks, especially for teaching. The listening sequence is really fantastic.
But Insights is more immediately practical for myself.

So some others I think might prove useful …
I Could Write a Book Opening
I VI - ii V - I VI - ii V
I ii - iii VI - ii - viio III
vi
- I Could Write a Book
- My Shining Hour (some versions)
- Time After Time
- Bye Bye Blackbird, except the eighth bar is a ii V to the ii chord
