Something a bit diff from MK. Just ran into it and liked it a lot. Nice round of applause for Mark's solo. A guy even dropped a bill in the jar! ... a Franklin I trust :)

Joel Frahm never hurt anybody either.

I went to a session Perry Smith used to host in Brooklyn and it was this really weird room where you could hear the music when you walked in but had to walk this horseshoe lap around the whole place to get to where you could see the band. I walked in and this sax player was just absolutely murdering Green Dolphin Street and the whole way through the bar I'm like "jesus christ who is this dude" and I round the corner and Joel was sitting in with the house band.

but goodness gracious that sax player was on fire!!!

Lovely solo by Mark. Nice tone, good variety, logically connected to the song while extending it.

As for the sax player, well... that was exactly the kind of sax playing I don't dig. All up, loud, fast, no dynamics and too damn many choruses. I might not stay for a second song. When I say my favorite sax player is Paul Desmond, that probably explains that.

Yes, some guys don't know when to finish their solo. Or did he miss regulary the end of the form and thought " sh..., now I have to do another chorus but I don't know anymore what to play...".

I can assure you, Joel Frahm was not regularly missing the end of the form.

Yes, I'm pretty shure he knows it.

I'll just say that Joel Frahm is not my favorite saxophonist, and leave it at that. My taste is just my own.

Sorry for further derailing the thread. I've seen a number of videos in which Mark plays rhythmic, straight-ahead jazz, and he does that very well. I always enjoy his videos, whatever the playing style.

Yes, the sax drove me nuts I see why Howard Roberts got bit against playing bebop all the time. Mark you're playing was great and just fit bill a lesson how to play and solo. Truely nice guitar work from a pro.

i could not have said it better I am going to go listen to Desmond now. I put him on when I go through my daily stretching routine for about 20 minutes.

Another excellent solo as well as excellent comping by Mark.

I liked the young fella on the left, a few shaky notes here and there but he showed a sense of humor, which I always appreciate. Arguably better than my solos. And I liked the tenor sax solo much better than the one in the other video.

It was nice to hear something from Mark that wasn't 40 bpm for a change. I was starting to think he was just one of those dudes that just tries to put a sleeper hold on me with his guitar.

I thought the sax man did a good job for a small club courtyard gig. I think some of the forum expect they are gonna hear the next Charlie Parker or something when they see a sax guy playing jazz on a local level. Not a very realistic thought.

Interesting tidbit RE the kid in glasses, Adam Siegel: apparently he's a world class steel pan AKA steel drum tuner, and has travelled the world doing it. He's reported to have perfect pitch, which has got to help. It's done with a pretty hefty hammer. Might be tougher than he looks!

@ Mark K: my pleasure sir!

I thought Fram was cooking. I like Desmond, but I also like to see guys tearing it up. Did Desmond ever rip through Oleo?

    That was fun Mark.

Now for something a little less Out To Lunch, and also from the bare-face years.
Wait for the smile at the end.

Knowing next to nothing about percussion instruments, I did not know that steel drums could be tuned per se. I thought they were like a gong, a cymbal, etc., and just were what they were. Interesting sound, though. IIRC there's a video of Jaco playing "The Chicken" with a steel drum player.

Perfect pitch sounds like (no pun intended) a mixed blessing. I would love to have better relative pitch than I have, however.

Great playing all round, including the bass (nice solo).
