Play two octaves in position...of each scale... and it's modes... starting on low E string, working up neck and back down.
Then ....each scale degree has or implies a chord... just like the Major scale and it's modes.
The goal is to be able to play anything anywhere on the fretboard. The drop 2 etc... thing is just to get you in the direction of learning the fretboard, any chord anywhere with any note on top.
When comping... you have,
The top note, the bottom and the middle. Eventually, you'll learn how to use those three parts with controlled rhythmic patterns that will imply... where your going, (targets), where your coming from, (harmonic reference) and how your getting there, (chord patterns).
7th chords, drop 2s and 3s etc... are just a starting point, to help you begin to learn the fretboard and be able to eventually play any note on top of any chord '
I'm giving you the short version. I'll pull out some handouts with examples etc...

Yea... pfelton, sorry, just watched your vid... very cool.
But trad. voice leading when playing jazz is just a tool. Personally... the last thing you want to do is sound smooth etc..
Generally lines are for implying harmonic movement, not just connecting changes. All good practice for learning the fretboard etc...
The goal isn't just to spell changes, jazz isn't about playing the simple chords. Generally tune have basic changes notated with a melody and an arrangement... Which is just the starting point, the basic Form.
Simple example, take a tune and change the harmonic reference, take a tune in Major...and play it in minor.
Talk later.
