For anyone that has gone through this material I'm wondering how much time did you dedicate to internalize all the different fingerings and patterns within the first chapter? I'm current on page 12 and I'm starting to realize there are vast amount of ways that these patterns can be combined and when you consider the permutations it's staggering. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if dedicating time to really internalizing all of these fingerings as well as being able to shift between any of the cells and their fingerings at any time is the goal of this first chapter or if I should just focus on a few of them and not try to deeply internalize all of these fingerings and patterns? I'm really enjoying the book but If the goal is to internalize all of it, this is going to take a considerable amount of time for me....not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm not sure what else you are doing, but here's my general advice on this.
Some music instruction books are the authors lifetime pursuit distilled into 100 pages. Learn what you can, play as much as you enjoy and don't forget to play tunes and get out there.

Great advice Allen. Thanks for chiming in.

Vincent actually offers a few tips for learning stuff from his work in his book Line Games. I will type it up when I get back home.

Randy Vincent also talks about how to practice the material in Cellular Approach. It's right in the beginning, in the section titled "Introduction". I suggest everyone who is working with the book read that section first.

I have read that section but apparently I’ve forgotten what he said if he mentions his expectations for the reader concerning the material. I’ll have to read that introduction again. Just to clarify I’m wondering if he’s expecting all of this to be internalized as I go through the material. Thanks for chiming in.

This is the relevant paragraph in the introduction (thanks to Google Lens):
First of all, it's a good idea to break things down and practice small amounts with focus on the fine details, and don't worry that it seems there's too much you're not getting to. Patience is key. If you chip away on bite-size pieces they will eventually accumulate into a vast amount of useful material. Take your time and make sure you hear all the notes intended and only the notes intended, and evenly in time. Don't worry about the other patterns you're not getting to yet. There will be plenty of other days for those.

Ok thanks and yes I clearly remember reading that. I’m not sure it really touches on my question but if I read between the lines maybe he is saying that ultimately all the material is meant to be fully internalized. Thank you for typing that out I appreciate it.

I've only recently acquired a few of Randy's books and haven't yet gotten into his cellular approach, but I'm fortunate enough to have seen him play at several fundraisers for the jazz program at Santa Rosa Junior College in Bennett Friedman's quartet and can confirm that Randy's got the goods. It's fascinating to watch him comping and improvising in a small venue with Jeff Denson's bass, Kendrick Freeman's percussion, and Bennett's always-lyrical lines. Certainly one of the best things about living in west Sonoma County!

I love getting books and I have a cabinet full. Many ebooks too.
Do I finish them? No way.
That used to bother me but no more.
A book costs about as much as a lesson from a good teacher. If one can pick up a couple things or a good tune that’s a win.

I absolutely agree!!

FWIW, Randy Vincent was Julian Lage's teacher. Based on that, I have a suspicion that his approach might work.
