FYI: Just came across a program called Moises which is great for track separation. I tried it using the album Fitzgerald and Pass Again. It totally enabled me to eliminate the vocal (sorry Ella) and listen to how Joe Pass accompanies a singer.
I think this is going to be a very useful app (for phones or desktop).

I've messed with LALAL.Ai a few times - it's about the same thing. I used it to remove Wes from a couple tunes to get a backing track and it worked fairly well. I tried it on a Ventures tune and it didn't work at all - it had trouble differentiating which electric guitar I wanted removed. However, if there's an obvious lead instrument or vocal, it seems to work well.

I also made versions with horn and no keys to practice comping without McCoy getting in my way :-) These rhythm sections beat the hell out of iReal. Fun to play with.
I bet it works a lot better with pulling out vocals as they're usually more identifiable than some instruments are. Maybe they've worked harder on that. Karaoke.

Yes, it does work better with vocals. If you want to know how the pros comp behind a singer, try doing what I did: use it on Fitzgerald & Pass...Again Moises cuts out the vocal almost totally and you can listen to how Joe P accompannies a singer. Now is that a valuable lesson for a guitarist or what? :-)

And that is only the beginning what you can do with Moises. Very useful program, for sure.

I have used it to transpose songs into other keys I want to play along with. I think it is very useful.

I use it, but I'm finding it hard to separate/mute Wes' guitar. Any suggestions?
-
I have found Moises fairly ineffective in separating piano or guitar from other instrument tracks, but I understand Logic now has a stem separator that runs only on Apple silicon. I'm still using an Intel Mac so I can't do a useful comparison. Others may be able to comment on how Logic's stem separator compares with Moises's in separating instrumental tracks.

My Mac is Intel too. Thanks.

Maybe this worked but you have to download to play? How can I make it play from the thread? First time I've tried to do this....

Which album were you using? I would think that the newer Wes albums would be harder to separate due to the string arrangements etc.

Have not tried it myself.

I have it but have not had a chance to try it. Audacity also has something similar.

This came out pretty good except one place - it's from the California Dreaming album

Moises has totally changed how I practice. I use it all the time and it works well enough to great about 80% of the time.
In my experience it struggles the most with separating piano tracks. The way to get around this is 1. Enable both keys and piano tracks. A lot of times it will get half on one and half on the other 2. Have it put the piano on the "other" track. Sometimes the bass will bleed into that track so it's not ideal, but usually passable.
I used it on four on six from smokin at the half note and it separated out the guitar perfectly. Now I just have to try and play like Wes

Skip, You have to create a shared link to your box.com file, then copy the link and post it.

Here's 'Winds of Barcelona' that I did several months ago - it left some guitar so I ran the same Mp3 file through again this morning and it didn't get much better. I may try running the original Mp3 through both BIAB and Audacity when I get a chance and see which is better,

I used LALAL.Ai

**UPDATE** BIAB didn't work well at all - it lumps piano/guitar together and gets rid of both, plus the audio after splitting is very rough/scratchy/glitchy. So far LALAL.Ai is my favorite. I originally got 500 minutes for $30 and they deduct for the time it takes to render a song - I think it was 3 minutes +/- for the Wes tune - so not overly costly.Last edited by Skip Ellis; 02-07-2025 at 03:08 PM.

I'm revisiting Moises now. I looked at it awhile back and thought it was pretty interesting but then I went and chased something else.
I'm using the free version, and thinking of buying a month of the Premium level to see if it's worth getting. I've only been using it for "rock" songs (Pearl Jam/Billy Squire), and the track separation has worked wonderfully, except for a song by the Revivalists. The "other" instrument tends to be acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel, and keys. Moises is still helpful, but I'm curious if the Premium level will offer a bit more granularity.
