    Saw Fripp:

Discipline tour @ Rock Pile Toronto
    Frippertronics @ U of T
League Of Crafty Gentlemen @ Seneca (Toronto) (Crafty Guitarists?)

    Massive influence.

I searched for that sustain and wrote songs in 11 and 7 and 5.

The final nail in the coffin for my teaching career was a big-hair kid on Long Island who wanted "a few tricks to play like the guy in Whitesnake." I had no idea what that was. He played me a cut.

"You're gonna have to work a whole lot harder."

Now I know who it was. Thanks!

Caught "BEAT" in Denver the other night (anyone else there?)! Fun show overall -- here are Tony's pics:

    Tony Levin Tour Diary

The Paramount Theatre is a cool, old place; about 1000 seats (so, 980 dudes and 20 women!).

Haven't been to a rock concert for a while, so I felt a bit like my folks when we were growing up: "You boys need to turn down that loud music!" [of course I had earplugs, but the PA was way too loud, especially the vocals, so they were often distorted and painful, which wasn't fun.] Great energy, though, and fun music, so still highly recommended!

Not coming to my neck of the woods apparently but it’s been enjoyable watching the band slowly settle into the material. Band sounds amazing now.

Actually I love all the Crimson albums—though admittedly I haven’t heard the live album Earthbound in ages, and Fripp doesn’t like it at all.

Until the 3 albums with Belew, their earlier works all sounded very distinct, and each have their own charms. Despite the similarity in style of the 3 80’s albums, you can trace the evolution from the complex New Wave polyrhythmic style to the Industrial style they tended toward in later live incarnations.

They are probably the most consistently interesting band in prog rock, if not rock in general. Always evolving, never content to rest on laurels, for over 50 years.

Although personally I can’t stand prog, I have tremendous respect for those guys. It may not be my taste but it’s clear that this music is remarkable. I’ve followed Vai’s career since The Attitude Song was featured on a flexidisc in an old issue of Guitar Player Magazine and have seen him play several times (yes, with Whitesnake too). He’s truly remarkable. It’s hard to think of someone else who plays so emotionally. Then on top of that he’s got his own voice, writes amazing stuff, is a theory scholar, writes orchestral music and has almost unlimited technical facility on the guitar. His album Passion & Warfare is a milestone in electric guitar music.
