    Great! If you get a chance to chat with Paul Franklin (the amazing steel player), tell him that Jim, the jazz steel player from Philadelphia, sends his best regards.

    Hi basinstreet;
    I highly recommend this book:"Jazz Lover's Guide to U.S." by Christiane Bird.

    Meanwhile, if you really are planning to come through New York City, let me know and i can give you some itinerary ideas. Beside all the great live music (do not miss "Smalls" jazz club), NYC has excellent beaches and fine hiking trails - all reachable via public transportation, so you can have a day outside and be back in the city in time for an excellent meal before the music begins. Also, I know good open jazz jam that you could sit in on - someone can lend you a guitar for that. We have some baseball here, too.

    Wow. They were really good. I was a few Hours Early and it has sold out but I managed to catch the second half which was brilliant. Didn't get to speak to the band unfortunately. All great players.

    Eddy b - any suggestions for a bar in New Orleans tonight? Just driving in now!

    Tommy - im on a borrowed phone at the min but that would be fantastic, will reply properly when I can

    Regards

    Chicago is the place you want to see if you are into blues and jazz.

    My best advice, as a Canadian who really sees the contrast in cities. Be very careful at night in Detroit and Chicago. Pay attention to the neighborhood you are in. They change by the block. Don't go wandering around at night if you don't know where you are. Yes, there are great things to see but many people have vacations ruined by straying to far into bad areas.

    Lived in Windsor for a few years and traveled to Detroit weekly. Gets scary at times.

    Chicago's ok for jazz. Not NYC by a long shot. You could see all the live places for jazz in a few days. But we do have a few great places.

    Blues is like pizza here. You can get it anywhere. Doesn't mean it'll be any good. Everybody with a guitar in chicago THINKS they can play the blues

    It's also very safe. The media would have you believe differently, but most of the bad stuff is going on in the residential neighborhoods, not the central business district (the "loop," and nearby areas) that a tourist would likely hang out in.

    Made it down Frenchman a few nights, seen some really good stuff down there. I leave today, unfortunately didnt manage to make Presevation Hall as the queue was so long.

    Fritzles on Bourbon had an amazing pianist too, Cant remember his name though.

    Yeah I would agree there. I fell into a tourist blues trap. Was quite expensive to get in, and it was really quite shoddy playing by all involved. Felt like a chump for not realizing before paying.

    Hi Tommy. I fly to Philadelphia today for 2-3 days and then I will be in New York until the first of august. Wheres the open jam? I would be interested in that, even if its just watching. and the beaches and hiking sounds good to if you could give me a few suggestions it would be much appreciated. - edit - Just seen your PM! thats brilliant thanks.

    Thanks
