It wasn't that long ago that YouTube music guy Rick Beato interviewed jazz players. John Scofield and Mike Stern each got an hour interview on his channel. The partially disabled Keith Jarrett appeared on Beato's channel, and there have been others - classical musicians too.
I expected he'd comment on Miles Davis' birth centennial, and of course on the death of the legend Sonny Rollins. But nothing - zero - on his channel about these big events. There was, however, a lotta stuff about the band Rush.
I think Beato and his consultants have realized that the YouTube dollars are not there for jazz content. "Nice knowing you, Rick!..." I say, as I unsubscribe.

That's tragic, what is this world coming to?
-
I know Rick personally and I called him to let him know this devastating news, he broke down crying....Would you re-consider?
-
Does that bring him to under a billion subs?
-
people open their mouths and sounds come out.
this is not a discovery of 2026. this goes way back.
rick beato is good at it.
he doesn't need to open his mouth every damn time a celebrity has passed.
-
He was never that into jazz in the first place. He's just jazz adjacent and kind of listens and plays for credibility.

Beato’s channel is guitar centric. Sonny played the sax. Did you want Beato to pontificate about Sonny?
-
TF - your comment seems pretty snarky.
It seems to me that Beato puts a lot of effort into preparing for his videos. It's also possible he doesn't feel he can can really tackle Sonny Rollins.
Interviewing his peers would take time to organize and there are not that many left to talk to, though Bobby Broom would be a good source.
You can always make your own video.

Beato just did an epic interview with Tigran Hamasyan. And he’s always liked rock.

Beato never really did it for me. He's a legit musician, and he takes pride in his youtubing with going deep with the music content and context, but I can tell he doesn't really like jazz. I know the type. Can fake jazz but is more just a means to an end for him. Doesn't interest me to hear a rock guy acting knowledgeable about jazz.

I've seen some nice interviews with jazz musicians... But that's all.

We live in not easy times.
Rick-not enough jazz!!!

Beato does obituaries for pop music almost every week, but not for musicians.
His latest video is titled The End of an Era, which sounds as if it might be an obituary for his show, but it is nothing of the kind. He tells us the channel is ten years old, which gives him the opportunity to reheat the story of his son Dylan's perfect pitch. We also learn that he has a daughter called Lennon, or possibly Lenin; poor child.
He ends with: 'Well, I'm going to continue to make the same kind of videos, do more interviews, talk more about music theory, talk more about things that are that are interesting to me because that's pretty much what this channel has always been. But I'd love to know what your thoughts are because there's some incredibly smart people that watch this channel and that leave comments.'
I am tired of the 'Happy birthday, dead musician' racket. It is all clickbait. And I think obituaries are for saying what they lawyers would not let you say when the deceased was alive. But now is your chance to tell Beato you want to hear more about dead jazzmen. Fill your boots.

He has his audience who don't necessarily like jazz music.
It's simple.

Nice AI written text there bud

Rick Beato loves jazz. Specifically, he likes piano jazz.
This is one of the TEN videos he's recorded about/with Aydin Esen, who plays nothing but jazz. It is impossible not to hear his enthusiasm.
-
I don’t think I ever said hello to him?
Wait, I did watch a video of his about counting time.
Nothing against him really just too many things out there to possibly keep up with.
-
It seems to me that Rick is a very nice man.
-
Yeah mean that’s it, right? Jazz has a tiny audience. And it’s not like Beato was ever specifically a jazz YouTuber.

I do it - if I wanted audience I’d just make gear videos. And it would be easy. But I make videos about Antoine Boyer or whatever (another recent Beato interview btw) because it’s what I want to do.
But also it’s not like Beato isn’t a huge rock fan, because he is. But he does also love his jazz, that’s obvious.
Beato neglects some areas as a music guy, but jazz isn’t one of them.

To be honest, I'm tired of this internet and I'm back to listening to my favorite albums that I've been collecting for 50 years.

I saw one segment where he was talking about how ridiculously over complicated and difficult jazz is.
His example was "look, here is the first jazz tune I learned"
Played the head to Donna Lee as best he could (with a couple breaks in between)
Then he said "not only that, then you have to learn the chords!" then he played some chord arrangement on every beat with passing chords.
He knows that is not the entry point, but he was intentionally misleading to non jazz players to make his point
-
Nice people are on this forum that they notice such jazz nuances.
I like that.
-
Well. He’s said some daft stuff.

I feel you… it all gives us less pleasure than a turntable and some good records. And yet it’s addictive.
